Field hockey suffers first setback of season at top-ranked BowdoinSeptember 7, 2008 BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College field hockey team blanked top-ranked Bowdoin College for the first 20-plus minutes before the Polar Bears scored three quick goals en route to a 6-0 victory on Sunday at Ryan Field. The Lyons fell to 2-1, while defending national champion Bowdoin posted its second shutout in as many games this fall. The Polar Bears have won 35 consecutive home contests, the longest streak in the nation, while winning 22 straight overall. Bowdoin holds down the top spot in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. Senior Lindsay McNamara (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) put the hosts on the board at the 20:38 mark, finished off a natural hat trick by 23:00 and tallied her fifth goal to make the score 5-0 8:43 into the second half. Junior Shavonne Lord (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) scored Bowdoin's sixth goal at the 49-minute mark. Wheaton was outshot, 36-6, while the Polar Bears collected 15 of the game's 17 penalty corners. Junior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 18 saves during a complete-game effort in net, recording the most stops by a Lyon keeper since Mary Catherine Boll '07 had 19 at Bowdoin on September 10, 2006. Juniors Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and Andria Laroche (Skowhegan, ME/Skowhegan Area) both limited further damage by notching a defensive save. Senior Emileigh Mercer (Newton, MA/Newton North) turned aside one shot for the Polar Bears in the first half, while sophomore Emily Neilson (Chatham, PA/Taft) went untested in the second stanza. After playing its first three games away from home, Wheaton competes on Clark Field in each of its next three contests, beginning against the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
