Ardito's five-point night carries visiting Wheaton past Simmons, 3-1

September 2, 2008

BOSTON, MA- Senior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) played a role in all three goals on Tuesday night, helping the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 3-1 victory against Simmons College at Winsor School Field. The Lyons are 2-0 for the third straight season, while the Sharks were opening their 2008 campaign.

Ardito struck with a pair of goals during the first 5:22, tallying with 4:30 gone before making it 2-0 just 52 seconds later off sophomore Margaux Bolte's (Belmont, MA/Belmont) helper. Wheaton outshot the hosts, 14-3 in the first half but was blanked for the remainder of the stanza, and Simmons made it a 2-1 game at 18:42. Freshman Lee Sutherland (Wolfeboro, NH/Kingswood Regional) tallied off junior Emily Sypher's (Orono, ME/Orono) assist.

The Lyons held advantages of 12-4 in shots and 8-4 in penalty corners during the final period, netting the lone marker of the half when Ardito dished a penalty-corner pass to junior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga), who fired home her third goal of the season at 62:11.

Junior Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made six saves in the win, as the visitors outshot Simmons, 26-7 and edged the Sharks, 11-8 in penalty corners. Freshman Mary Simeoli (Westfield, MA/Westfield) turned aside 10 shots for the hosts in her college debut.

With five points, Ardito now has 72 for her career, as she passed Lyndsie Ryalls '08 for third place in program history. Ardito also has 24 assists, standing two shy of matching the record, and moved alone into fourth at Wheaton in goals (24).

Wheaton finishes up its season-opening three-game road swing at Bowdoin College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Ranked first in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, the Polar Bears ran the table last season en route to an NCAA Tournament title.
