Wheaton field hockey edged by Wellesley, 2-1 on Senior Day

October 17, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College fell into third place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey standings following a 2-1 loss to Wellesley College on Tuesday afternoon at Clark Field. On Senior Day, the Lyons fell to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference, remaining one win shy of tying both the program's overall and conference wins records. The Blue moved to 11-3 and 5-1.

The Lyons held first-half advantages of 15-7 in shots and 7-4 in penalty corners while scoring just 2:31 into the contest. Following a pair of penalty corner passes, senior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) ripped a shot from outside the circle that sophomore Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) tipped in for a 1-0 advantage. With 14 minutes remaining, the hosts nearly doubled their lead, but freshman Alex Block's (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) bid for a goal at the far post was turned away by Wellesley senior midfielder Jenn Shrull (Windham, NH/Pinkerton Academy). Senior back Katie Smith (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) also notched a defensive save during the opening half for the Blue.

In the dwindling seconds of the stanza, Wellesley was awarded a penalty corner and allowed time to expire before initiating a game-tying sequence. Wheaton senior keeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) controlled the ball after a scramble before it popped out from under her to sophomore Lauren Friedman (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), whose backhanded push found the cage for her first goal of the season.

The momentum shifted in the second period, as the Blue scored 7:26 after halftime and limited Wheaton's offense to two shots and no corners in the first 32 minutes. Wellesley took the lead for good when senior Julia Parzych's (Auburn, MA/Auburn) shot slowly rolled into the Wheaton goal despite freshman back Andria Laroche's (Skowhegan, ME/Skowhegan Area) valiant effort at a defensive save. It was Parzych's 11th goal.

Late in regulation, Wheaton picked up three corners in less than two minutes, but senior back Elizabeth Reimers (Wareham, MA/Tabor Academy) was twice turned away by sophomore keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA/Saint Stephen's & Saint Agnes School), including once right on the doorstep.

Wheaton ended up outshooting the Blue, 19-14, while each team drew 10 corners. Boll turned aside seven shots, and Hewitt notched nine saves.

Wheaton finishes up its regular season slate with a pair of NEWMAC road games, beginning with a contest at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
