Perennial national power Bowdoin hands Lyons first loss of seasonSeptember 10, 2006 BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College field hockey team saw its unblemished 4-0 start to the season come to a halt Sunday afternoon at perennial national power Bowdoin College, 5-1. The Polar Bears, who were ranked fourth in last year's final National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, won their second game in as many days. The hosts scored the only two goals of the opening half during a 5:33 stretch. Senior Burgess LePage (Cumberland, ME/Greely) picked up the first tally with 26:50 on the clock, while sophomore Julia King (Yarmouth, ME/Saint Mark's) scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon at 21:17. Wheaton responded in the second stanza with an unassisted goal from sophomore Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford), her first of the year, just 3:43 into the half. However, the Polar Bears recaptured their two-goal advantage 1:08 later on King's second tally. Sophomore Lindsay McNamara (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) completed the scoring with a pair of goals to clinch the Bowdoin victory. Senior goalie Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) turned back a career-best 19 shots for the Lyons, while Bowdoin senior Kate Leonard (Eliot, ME/Phillips Andover Academy) and sophomore Emileigh Mercer (Newton, MA/Newton North) combined for six stops in the win. Bowdoin held advantages of 26-9 in shots and 7-3 in penalty corners. The Lyons, who were seeking their first 5-0 start since 1991, look to get back to their winning ways Thursday afternoon with a non-conference home game against the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
