Five field hockey players named to national academic squad, Wheaton earns NFHCA Division III Academic Team award

March 2, 2006

NORTON, MA- Five Wheaton College field hockey players have been named to the 2005 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic squad, as announced by NFHCA Executive Director Jennifer Goodrich. The Lyons were also recognized with the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award.

Honorees must follow a certain criteria to qualify for the individual national academic award, including having a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better through the first semester of the 2005-06 academic year. In order to be a recipient of the team honor, institutions must achieve a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester.

Seniors Leigh-Anne Cioffredi (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) and Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston), junior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham), sophomore Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) and freshman Lauren Henderson (Marblehead, MA/Newman School) were each named to the national academic squad.

Cioffredi and Rowland closed out their careers by each being named to the NFHCA National Academic team for the fourth straight season. Cioffredi, who was also a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic selection, started all 20 games in the backfield while contributing four assists. Rowland, a second team selection for both the Dartfish/NFHCA Division III All-New England East Region and NEWMAC All-Conference squads, set a career high with 17 points while tying her career best of seven goals in 19 games.

Clarke, who also earned national academic squad accolades as a sophomore, started all 20 games at midfield while turning in career highs of four goals and 13 points, tying her personal best of five assists and recording five defensive saves. Ryalls also drew her second national academic squad award after leading the Lyons with 10 goals and 22 points. Henderson was named to the team for the first time, as the reserve forward appeared in 15 games last fall.

Wheaton posted an 8-12 overall mark in 2005 while going 3-5 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons tied for fifth in the final conference standings.
