2005 NEWMAC FIELD HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - Sixth-seeded Wheaton falls, 3-1 to number-three seed Wellesley

October 29, 2005

WELLESLEY, MA- Sixth-seeded Wheaton College saw its season come to an end during a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament first round loss to third-seeded Wellesley College, 3-1 on Saturday. The Lyons finished 8-12, while Wellesley improved to 12-5.

Much like the teams' regular season meeting, Wheaton broke out on top first. Freshman Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) tallied her eighth goal of the season off a penalty corner with 8:51 remaining in the first half thanks to a helper from sophomore Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford). The assist gave Ryalls 22 points this season, the seventh most in program history.

However, Wellesley notched the equalizer with 18 seconds remaining in the opening half, as junior Lydia Parzych (Auburn, MA/Auburn) converted freshman Katie Sang's (Cupertino, CA/Monte Vista) pass. Senior Lindsey Holiday (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) lent helpers to the Blue's final two goals, which came within a 1:25 span of the second half. Senior Karyn Benson (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) scored the game-winner with 14:41 remaining, and classmate Julia Hunter (Amherst, MA/Amherst) tallied at 13:16.

Unlike the teams' regular season meeting, which Wellesley won 5-1 while holding advantages of 47-10 in shots and 16-2 in penalty corners, the Lyons drew the majority of offensive chances Saturday. Wheaton outshot the Blue, 32-15 while edging Wellesley, 13-6 in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) made nine saves for the Lyons, while Wellesley freshman Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA/Saint Stephen's and Saint Agnes School) stopped 15 shots.

Wellesley advances to the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament, where it will face second-seeded Springfield College next Saturday in a game at Babson College.
