Wheaton wins for third time in four games with 4-0 victory over SmithOctober 16, 2005 NORTHAMPTON, MA- Freshmen Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) and Lauren Connolly (Manchester, MA/Pingree School) each scored a pair of goals as the Wheaton College field hockey team downed Smith College, 4-0 in Sunday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game. The Lyons won for the third time in four games and improved to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC, moving into sixth place in the league, while the Pioneers fell to 6-7 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. Connolly's first collegiate tally went as the game-winner 14:08 into the contest off an assist from sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely). Connolly and Ardito later iced the game by accounting for three goals during a 3:43 span of the second half. Ardito recorded her first goal of the game by tipping home senior Leigh-Anne Cioffredi's (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) shot after a penalty corner at 20:32. Connolly tipped in her second goal of the afternoon 44 seconds later off a helper from sophomore Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford), and Ardito tallied a breakaway marker with 16:49 remaining. Junior Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) registered three saves for her fourth shutout this fall and extended her personal shutout streak to 404:16. Senior Megan Maguire (Hatfield, MA/Smith Academy) made 18 stops for the Pioneers, as the Lyons held advantages of 26-5 in shots and 17-3 in penalty corners. The Lyons continue their four-game road trip in a NEWMAC contest at Babson College on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Babson sits first in the league with a 6-0 conference mark.
