MIT blanks Lyons, 2-0 in NEWMAC field hockey affair

October 11, 2005

NORTON, MA- Senior Cheryl Texin (Lexington, MA/Lexington) recorded a goal and an assist during a two-minute span as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) knocked off Wheaton College, 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Tuesday at Clark Field. The Lyons fell to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the league, while MIT moved to 11-2 and 3-1.

Texin netted the game-winner off a penalty corner pass from senior Noelle Kanaga (Greenville, DE/Tower Hill) 10:52 into the game before assisting junior Sharon Prange (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) 1:51 later. Two minutes later, MIT junior Anna Ayuso (Street, MD/John Carroll School) took a breakout pass and moved with the ball toward the Wheaton cage, but senior keeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) made a sliding stick save to quell the threat.

With less than four minutes remaining in the half, the Engineers threatened, but the Lyon defense again came through. Prange fired another shot at the cage, but senior back Diane Trifilo (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett Regional) picked up her fifth defensive save of the season.

Wheaton found its best scoring chances in the closing minutes of regulation. With 11 minutes to go, junior Shea Clarke's (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) first shot was turned aside by MIT sophomore keeper Alexa Herman (Suffern, NY/Suffern) before Clarke's follow-up attempt was stopped on the goal line by freshman Rebecca Millson (Goffstown, NH/Holderness School), and the Lyons were awarded a penalty stroke. Clarke's stroke missed wide of the cage, and Wheaton remained scoreless. Nearly 30 seconds later, a trio of host shots was successively turned away by Herman.

MIT's final scoring chance came with 7:25 to go, but Wheaton sophomore back Ashley Miller (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) made a defensive save.

Fiskio was credited with three stops in 16:36 and junior Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School), who has yet to yield a goal this season, recorded nine saves in relief. Herman finished with 10 saves, as the Engineers held advantages of 22-17 in shots and 12-4 in penalty corners.

The Lyons begin a four-game road swing against UMass-Dartmouth Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
