Multiple scoring from Rowland and Clarke lifts Wheaton to 3-2 win at WPIOctober 8, 2005 WORCESTER, MA- Senior Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) and junior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) provided a goal and an assist apiece Saturday afternoon, leading Wheaton College to a 3-2 victory over host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action. The Lyons picked up their first conference win of the season and in the process snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 4-8 on the year and 1-3 in the NEWMAC. The Engineers saw their overall record fall below .500 at 5-6 with a 0-3 conference mark. Today's first goal of the game took nearly the entire half of play to come to fruition, as Wheaton captured a one-goal lead with just 11 ticks on the clock. The Lyons saw Clarke capitalize on a direct corner from Rowland, as Wheaton scored all three of this afternoon's goals on corners. Wheaton took no time at all in the second half to balloon its lead to 3-0, as Rowland and sophomore Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) contributed back-to-back tallies in the first 6:21 of play and 1:08 apart from each other. Rowland's goal came off a direct corner from sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely), while Ryalls tipped hers in on an initial shot from Clarke. WPI surged back with a pair of goals in under a two-minute span, when freshman Sarah Tracy (Oakland, ME/Messalonskee) and senior Megan Holmes (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) notched tallies at 13:21 and 11:26, respectively. With four minutes to play, Engineer freshman Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) looked for the game-tying goal with a short breakaway, but her attempt was denied by Wheaton senior keeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford). Fiskio accounted for eight stops in the victory, while WPI seniors Jessica Farrell (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett Regional) and Lynn Reni (Ashland, MA/Ashland) combined for four saves. The Blue and White held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, including an 8-6 margin in the opening half, and a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners. The Lyons look to make it two straight wins on Tuesday with a home contest against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
