Hickey earns D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region accoladeMarch 19, 2008 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's basketball standout Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) has been named to the D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region second team, as the junior is one of just 16 players from the region to earn an honor from the organization. D3hoops.com awards are voted upon by regional sports information directors. Hickey, who was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league first team earlier this month, became the first Lyon to draw a D3hoops.com accolade in the seven years the organization has honored student-athletes. She was one of four NEWMAC players to draw a D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region nod. Last year, the quad-captain became the initial Wheaton player to receive a regional award since 1996, earning notice from the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA). Hickey led Wheaton in scoring (13.6), placing fifth among all NEWMAC players, and led or tied for the team lead in points 14 times, including twice during the three-game NEWMAC Tournament. As the only player among the NEWMAC's top 10 in scoring, assists and both field goal and free throw percentages, Hickey shot 51.7 percent from the floor and connected on 77.3 percent of her free throw tries. She led Wheaton in three-point shooting (.467), coming within 0.002 of matching the school record. This season, Hickey had the fifth-best field goal percentage in program history, recorded the sixth-highest point total (394) and had the ninth-most field goals (149). On January 30, she became the ninth Wheaton player, and the first junior, to reach 1,000 points, and she is currently sixth with 1,168 points. A versatile presence at 5-9, Hickey placed second on the squad in rebounding (5.8) and was third in each assists (76) and steals (38). She recorded double figures in scoring 22 times, five-plus rebounds 18 times and three-plus assists 15 times. At 22-7, the Lyons advanced to their first NCAA Tournament since 1995, as they narrowly fell to Tufts University, 71-67 during the first round against a team that eventually advanced to the Elite Eight. Wheaton also won its initial NEWMAC regular season and tournament titles, corralling league crowns for the first time since 1995. With a 12-1 conference mark, the Lyons set a school record for league victories. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/21/08. |
