Champney collects first NEWMAC weekly honor of careerFebruary 25, 2008
A sophomore forward, Champney led Wheaton to a 2-0 week and its first NEWMAC regular season title, which was its first regular season conference crown since 1994-95, by averaging 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks while shooting 54.8 percent (17-31) from the field and 83.3 percent (5-6) from the charity stripe. During a 68-63 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Wednesday, Champney had 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with a pair of blocks. Versus Clark University on Saturday, Champney helped the Lyons to a 71-50 win behind 21 points, nine rebounds and a career-high six blocks, one shy of the school record. Champney, whose 44 blocks this year are third in a season at Wheaton, leads the team in rejections and rebounding average (6.6). She is second in scoring average (12.6) and third in field goal (.453) and free throw (.738) percentages. In the NEWMAC, Champney ranks first in overall blocks, second in blocks per game (1.8), seventh in scoring and 10th in field goal percentage. As host of a NEWMAC Tournament opener on Wednesday against MIT at 7:00 p.m., Wheaton is riding a four-game win streak with a 19-6 season record and 12-1 league mark. With a win on Wednesday, the Lyons will play in a semifinal round which they host for the first time since 1990. Wheaton hosted the final four in 1998-99 despite not advancing to the semifinals.
