Hickey earns NEWMAC All-Conference first team laurelsFebruary 27, 2007 WORCESTER, MA- Sophomore Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) became the initial Wheaton College women's basketball player to earn New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference first team honors in the league's nine-year history, as the NEWMAC's postseason meeting took place on Tuesday at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Hickey drew laurels a season after being named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and to the all-league second squad. By becoming the first Lyon since Allyson Aube '95 in 1995 to repeat as an all-conference selection, Hickey has averaged 14.1 points while shooting 50.7 percent thus far this season. She led the Blue and White to its first conference tournament victory and semifinal appearance since 1996, and the Lyons will play their first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament contest in 11 years tomorrow night when they host Suffolk University in Emerson Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. With a 17-10 record, the Blue and White broke a school record for conference wins with a 9-4 NEWMAC mark. Hickey led all NEWMAC players in field goal (52.8) and three-point (48.5) percentages during conference play, placed third in scoring (15.6), seventh in steals per game (2.2) and hit 19-of-21 free throw tries. She also scored in double figures 10 times in the 12 league games she played. Hickey is currently first in the NEWMAC in field goal percentage while ranking third in free throw percentage, sixth in scoring and ninth in steals, as she was one of only two players to be among the top 10 in all four categories. Already a proficient post player - she has notched 19 double-figure scoring games this season, including six of 20-plus - Hickey has displayed her versatility by hitting a three-pointer in 18 different games, recording three-plus assists nine times and picking up multiple steals on 13 occasions. She also snagged five-plus rebounds 15 times. She began the season on November 18 with a 20-point performance on 7-of-10 shooting against Wentworth Institute of Technology before tallying a season-high 23 points on three different occasions. During a 58-53 victory at WPI on January 11, Hickey canned a three-pointer with 2:29 remaining to put the Lyons up for good and hand the regular season champs one of only two NEWMAC losses they would sustain all year. Hickey finished with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Against visiting Babson College on February 7, Hickey collected 22 points, six rebounds and four steals as Wheaton rolled up an 80-59 win to avenge its lone league loss to that point. During a NEWMAC Tournament first round game with Clark University on February 21, Hickey had 21 points, going 7-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and hitting all five free throw tries. Through 52 career games, Hickey is among the top 20 in program history with 734 points. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/27/07. |
