Hickey's game-high 15 points push Lyons past MIT, 58-40

January 27, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, MA- Sophomore Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) netted a game-high 15 points as the Wheaton College women's basketball team remained tied for first place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) behind a 58-40 victory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Rockwell Cage on Saturday.

The Lyons improved to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the league, winning nine times in their last 10 games for the first time since 1995-96. After the day began with a four-team logjam at the top of the league standings, Wheaton and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) now stand alone in first place. The Engineers fell to 3-14 and 0-7.

Wheaton pounced on the hosts early, as senior Samara Audet's (Derry, NH/Trinity) offensive rebound and putback just 17 seconds into the contest gave the Lyons the lead for good. After leading by a 4-2 count following MIT's first hoop, the Lyons rattled off 19 of the game's next 23 points to forge a 23-6 lead with 7:03 remaining in the first half.

Hickey recorded eight straight Wheaton points during an early 3:14 stretch, as eight different Lyons scored during the first 13 minutes. The Blue and White also locked down defensively, holding MIT to two free throws and 0-of-8 shooting with eight turnovers during the 10:15 immediately preceding senior Michal Ruchelsman's (West Orange, NJ/The Frisch School) three-pointer with 6:17 left in the period. The Lyons led at halftime, 29-19, as nine different Lyons scored during the opening 20 minutes.

Wheaton maintained its double-digit advantage in the second stanza, pushing the lead to as many as 18 points on five different occasions. The Lyons held MIT to 1-of-8 shooting during the first 8:06 of the period as they opened up a 39-22 lead on sophomore Jennie Pleat's (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) lay-up. Seven Lyons scored in the period, as the Blue and White hit all eight of its free throw attempts and forced 10 turnovers.

Hickey's 15 points came on 7-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes, and she also turned in three assists. Freshman Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four rebounds in just 11 minutes, while Pleat went 3-of-3 for eight points. Junior Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) had a team-high eight rebounds, while senior Casey Sorbara (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) added a team-best four assists. In all, 10 different Lyons scored.

Senior Sharon Prange (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) turned in 14 points and 11 rebounds for MIT, while classmate Christa Margossian (Revere, MA/Revere) and sophomore Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) had eight points each. Junior Kimberly Soo Hoo (Benicia, CA/Berkeley) notched a game-high seven assists.

The Lyons visit Wellesley College for a NEWMAC affair on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Emerson Gymnasium for a three-game conference homestand.
