January 2, 2007

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- The Wheaton College women's basketball team began the 2007 calendar year on a down note Tuesday night, as the Lyons fell to Williams College, 75-50 in the opening round of the Williams Winter Classic at Chandler Athletic Center.

Wheaton, which fell to 4-5 with the loss, will face local foe Bridgewater State College in tomorrow's consolation game at 3:00 p.m. The Ephs, who are receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll, moved to 9-2 and are slated to meet Bates College in the championship contest.

The Lyons got off to a slow start and were unable to recover from a double-digit deficit at the half. Williams opened the game on a 14-5 run and eventually carried a commanding 37-19 advantage into the locker room. The hosts used a 10-0 run late in the frame en route to a 31-14 lead at 4:11. The Ephs shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first half, while the Blue and White made just eight field goals for a 32.0 percent clip.

Despite seeing improved play in the second half, Wheaton didn't get any closer than 18 points after the hosts took a 39-19 lead just 45 seconds into the stanza. Williams led by as many as 27 with just under seven minutes remaining. The Lyons were plagued by 25 turnovers while being outrebounded, 37-32. The Ephs' defensive efforts included 13 steals and nine blocks.
