Women put a halt to skid following 75-68 decision over Hartwick

December 2, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College put an end to its three-game losing skid Saturday afternoon thanks to a 75-68 victory over Hartwick College in non-conference women's basketball action at Emerson Gymnasium. Playing in their third straight home game, the Lyons even up their record at 3-3, while the Hawks also break even at 2-2 overall.

Outside of six early lead changes and four ties in the opening half, Wheaton led for the majority of time this afternoon, including pushing its advantage out to as many as 21 with 6:15 remaining in regulation. The Lyons made 60.7 percent of their shots in the second stanza and finished the game at a 53.7 percent clip. The Hawks got their deficit all the way back to seven points at 1:44, but it proved to be too little too late, as Wheaton knocked down four straight free throws to clinch the win.

Sophomore Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) was the Blue and White's lone double-figure scorer with 18 points, going 6-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line, to go along with a game-best nine rebounds. The Lyons had a balanced scoring attack, as seven of their players tallied six points or more.

Following a seesaw opening to the first half, a 7-0 Wheaton run capped by five points from sophomore Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) gave the Lyons a 15-10 lead with 9:48 left. Hartwick knotted the score at 25 on a three by senior Alanna Adams (College Point, NY/Francis Lewis) with 4:44 on the clock, but four straight points from freshman Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) provided the hosts with a lead for good. The Lyons entered the break with a 33-27 edge.

With Wheaton clinging to a 35-31 second-half lead at 18:17, the Blue and White went on to outscore the Hawks, 32-15 during a 11:43 span to secure a commanding 67-46 advantage. However, Hartwick went on a run of its own, slicing into its 21-point deficit thanks to a 15-2 spurt that cut the Lyons' lead to 69-61. Seniors Jenny Knight (Oak Bluffs, MA/Martha's Vineyard Regional) and Lindsay Wilson (Oneida, NY/Oneida) combined for 13 points during the run.

Aside from Hickey's leading performance, Wheaton senior Casey Sorbara (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) notched a season-high nine points with five assists, while Champney, junior Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) and freshman Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) chipped in with eight points each. Smith added seven markers, and senior Kim McCormack (Milton, MA/Milton) had an all-around solid game with six points, six rebounds and five assists.

Wilson finished with a game-best 26 points for Hartwick, knocking down 9-of-11 foul shot attempts while picking up four steals and three assists. Knight posted 16 points, shooting 5-of-5 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, and hauled down six boards. Senior Mara Tichy (Bayport, NY/Bayport) completed the double-figure scorers with 11 points.

Wheaton wraps up its first semester of action, along with its five-game homestand, in the coming week when the Lyons welcome Suffolk University Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. and Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
