Wheaton secures sixth tip-off title after 77-48 win over Green MountainNovember 19, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's basketball team captured its sixth tournament title and first since 1999 with a 77-48 triumph over Green Mountain College during the 15th Wheaton Tip-Off Classic Sunday in Emerson Gymnasium. The Lyons move to 2-0 for the second straight season, while the Eagles fall to 0-2. A total of 13 Wheaton players contributed to the scoring column, with senior Samara Audet (Derry, NH/Trinity) being one of three players in double figures with a career-best 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, a perfect 4-of-4 from the three-point line and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Audet also posted a team-best-tying seven rebounds in 19 minutes. Freshman Ida Kruse (Vershire, VT/Rivendell Academy) turned in 11 points and five steals off the bench, while senior Kim McCormack (Milton, MA/Milton) added 10 points and five boards. Following a 3-2 Wheaton edge with 19:20 left in the opening half, the Lyons went on a 21-4 run en route to an 18-point advantage with 11:53 to go. Audet, McCormack and sophomore Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) combined for Wheaton's first 19 points of the stanza. However, Green Mountain outscored the hosts, 15-1 during a 3:13 span to climb all the way back to within four points at 25-21. The Lyons eventually took a 38-28 lead with 3:51 to go and later reeled off nine unanswered points to secure a 47-28 lead at the break. Wheaton began the second half exploding for 15 straight points for a 62-28 lead with 16:16 remaining, as the Lyons went on a 24-0 run over a span of 7:35 back to the waning minutes of the opening stanza. The Eagles chipped away at their deficit and got as close as 20 at 66-46 with 8:31 to play, but Wheaton sealed the win by scoring 11 of the game's final 13 points for the 29-point victory. The Lyons held a 54-31 rebounding advantage. For Green Mountain, sophomore Christina Chamberlin (Woodstock, VT/Woodstock Union) registered a team-best 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting with three steals in 20 minutes. Classmate Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) added 10 points, a game-best eight assists and four steals, while freshman Emma Buckley (Lakeville, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. In the afternoon's second game, Wentworth Institute of Technology picked up its first victory of the weekend with a 72-48 win over Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Both teams now stand at 1-1 on the young season. Saint Joseph's began play with a 5-4 edge at 15:25, but the Leopards scored nine straight to secure a lead that was not relinquished. Six straight points cut the Monk deficit to two, but Wentworth rattled off 12 unanswered points for a 25-11 advantage with just over six minutes left. The Leopards pushed their lead out to 16 points on three occasions and eventually went into the locker room with a commanding 33-19 edge. Wentworth forced Saint Joseph's into 18 turnovers and converted 21 points off its takeaways through the first 20 minutes. The Leopards maintained their offensive pressure in the second stanza, scoring 15 of the first 17 points to open up a 48-21 advantage. The Monks strung together a 10-0 run to pull within 17 thanks to five straight points from freshman Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME/Catherine McAuley), but Wentworth responded with a 13-2 spurt to put the game out of reach. Leopard sophomore Chelsea Proulx (Griswold, CT/Griswold) led all scorers with 16 points, senior Cheyenne Noble (Murrysville, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) recorded nine points, seven boards and six assists, while freshman Michelle Fauci (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) had seven points, seven assists and six rebounds. For Saint Joseph's, freshman Allison Miner (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) and Freeman accounted for 13 and 12 points, respectively, while 5-6 sophomore guard Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME/Medomak Valley) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
