Coppola lands ECAC and NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week selectionsFebruary 4, 2008
Coppola led the Lyons to a pair of conference wins last week, averaging 27.0 points while shooting 70.4 percent (19-27) from the floor, 76.9 percent (10-13) from beyond the three-point arc and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the free throw line. He also grabbed five rebounds per game from his shooting guard position. Coppola exploded for 31 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three, during Wednesday's 77-72 overtime win against visiting Springfield College. In Saturday's 84-81 home victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he made 8-of-11 overall and 4-of-5 from three-point land for 23 points to go along with a game-high seven rebounds. Leading the Lyons in scoring average (19.0) and three-point field goal percentage (.492), as he has knocked down 62-of-126 from beyond the arc, Coppola is second on the team in steals (21) and third in field goal percentage (.518). He has paced the team in scoring 12 times, with Wheaton going 10-2 in those games, while recording double-figure point totals in all but two contests. Coppola has netted at least 30 points three times in the last 10 games, matching the total recorded by Lyons during the prior 112 contests. The last Wheaton player to hit 30 three times in a season was Josean Vega '05 in 2003-04. He is fourth in freshman scoring (342) in program history, and his 62 three-pointers are tied for sixth among all Lyons. As of last week, Coppola was among the conference's elite in several categories, including leading the way in three-pointers made per game. He was second in scoring, third in three-point field goal percentage and ninth in field goal percentage. Wheaton is 12-6 overall and 3-4 in league play, standing tied with two others for third in the NEWMAC standings. The Lyons are slated to play a pair of conference games this week, starting with Wednesday's road contest at the United States Coast Guard Academy, where Wheaton hopes to avenge an early-season loss to the Bears. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/11/08. |
