Youreneff named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team

March 23, 2007

NORTON, MA- Six Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the winter of 2006-07. Student-athletes receiving the award must have maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2006 fall semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. Women's swimming and diving had a school-best four honorees.

Senior co-captains Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa), junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, ME/Berwick Academy) led the women's swimming and diving team to the best dual mark in program history at 14-4 while helping the Lyons place fourth at the NEWMAC Championship, where the Blue and White matched its best finish. Behrens and Bohn each received academic all-conference nods each of the three years they were eligible for the honor, Pratt was a second-time qualifier, and Glover drew her first award. Pratt, a six-time all-conference finisher, played a hand in eight school records this year, while Glover helped two relay quartets to program standards. On March 8-10, Pratt became the first Lyon woman to swim at the NCAA Championship.

For the third straight year, senior co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) was a representative of the men's swimming and diving team when it came to academic all-conference laurels. By winning the 50-yard freestyle at the NEWMAC Championship, Roberts became the only athlete in league history to win the same swimming event at the conference meet four different times. Roberts has played a role in eight school records. An All-America finisher each of the last three years at the NCAA Championship, Roberts completed his career with six All-America honors after competing at the national meet on March 15-17.

Sophomore Patrick Youreneff (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) of the men's basketball team rounds out Wheaton's winter academic all-conference honorees. A reserve guard, Youreneff appeared in 11 games this year, making three starts, while shooting 55.6 percent from the field, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. He notched eight points and five assists in 26 minutes during his first collegiate start on February 10 against Springfield College before tallying 10 points and three helpers in 16 minutes versus Roger Williams University on February 17.

The NEWMAC sponsors four winter sports: men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming and diving.
