Zukowski becomes program's first three-time all-conference recipientFebruary 27, 2007 WORCESTER, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball senior Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) became the program's first player to earn New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference accolades three consecutive seasons at Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Zukowski was voted to the second team for the third time. Zukowski, who was named NEWMAC Player of the Week on two occasions this winter, turned in another very successful season in which he became the fifth Lyon to surpass 1,400 career points. Wheaton's lone captain, Zukowski led the team in scoring, three-point field goal percentage, free throw percentage, assists and steals, and was second in rebounding. He averaged 16.1 points and 4.2 rebounds with 117 assists and 44 steals while shooting 34.2 percent from three-point range and 86.0 percent from the free throw line. Leading the Blue and White in scoring during 13 of the team's 26 games, including racking up double figures in 20 of those contests, and in rebounding seven times, Zukowski was among the conference's elite in several statistical categories all season. He finished second in the NEWMAC in assists per game (4.5) and free throw percentage, third in scoring, fifth in three-pointers made per contest (1.9), seventh in steals per game (1.7) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage. Zukowski's senior season included one of the top single-game scoring performances in program history, as his 37-point effort against Clark University on January 11 moved him into a tie for third, just three points off the top scoring mark. In that game, Zukowski's 19 free throws set a school standard. His season totals place him in a tie for second for free throws made (135), third in free throw percentage and fifth in assists. Earlier this season, Zukowski joined the program's 1,000-point club as its 11th member. His name is scattered throughout the Wheaton record book, including ending his career first in school history in free throw percentage (.804), second in steals (171) and third in each assists (291) and free throws (336). Zukowski also placed fourth in three-pointers (187), fifth in points (1,417), field goals (447) and three-point field goal percentage (.379), and eighth in games (104). The only Wheaton player to have surpassed 1,350 points, 400 rebounds, 250 assists and 150 steals, Zukowski led the Lyons to their eighth conference tournament semifinal in the league's nine-year history before falling to eventual champion United States Coast Guard Academy. Wheaton went 11-15 on the season and 3-9 in the NEWMAC. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/28/07. |
