Zukowski collects ECAC and NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week awards

January 2, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball standout Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) picked up Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week awards for the week ending on Sunday, December 31. Zukowski also earned the NEWMAC honor on November 27.

Tabbed with the ECAC weekly accolade for the first time in his career, Wheaton's lone senior and captain was named MVP after leading the Lyons to the Salem State Christmas Tournament title over the weekend. He averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals, knocking down 17-of-20 free throw attempts while draining five three-point baskets.

Zukowski collected 23 points, six assists, five boards and five steals during Wheaton's 71-67 opening-round victory over Fitchburg State College, as he hit 10-of-12 freebie tries. In the championship game against the host Vikings, he had 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals during a 75-65 win. Salem State was receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll.

Zukowski's name is scattered throughout the conference's weekly leaders, pacing the seven-team league in assists per game. He also stands third in scoring, fourth in free throw percentage, sixth in steals, eighth in three-point field goals per game and 13th in rebounding. Zukowski has helped lead the Wheaton team to the top of the NEWMAC in free throw and three-point field goal percentages.

The 6-3 Lyons open conference play on the road this Saturday afternoon against Babson College. Scheduled to be Wheaton's fifth straight road game, Saturday's contest in Babson Park is set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
