Zukowski garners NEWMAC's first weekly men's basketball honor

November 27, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball standout Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) garnered the first weekly New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) honor of the 2006-07 season for the week ending on Sunday, November 26. Zukowski was named player of the week for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Zukowski, who is Wheaton's lone senior and captain, reached the 1,000-point plateau and was named to the all-tournament team at the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Plymouth State University two weekends ago. He averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists after going 16-of-18 on free throws in leading the Lyons to the championship game.

Zukowski became the 11th Wheaton men's player to reach 1,000 points when he netted 21 points, including shooting 10-of-12 on free throws, during an 88-82 win over Husson College on November 17. He added six rebounds and three assists while canning a trio of three-pointers. Against host Plymouth State the next day, Zukowski again led the team in scoring, this time accounting for 17 points. He also went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe with five assists.

Currently ranked second in the NEWMAC in scoring, Zukowski is tied for second in three-point field goals per game, fourth in free throw percentage, tied for fourth in three-point field goal percentage, fifth in assists per game and tied for 15th in rebounding. His numbers have allowed the 1-1 Lyons to lead the conference in free throw percentage while standing second in scoring offense and three-point field goal percentage.

After over a week off from competition, the Lyons remain on the road Tuesday night for a non-conference game at Salve Regina University. The start time in Newport, Rhode Island, is slated for 8:00 p.m.
