Zukowski is latest Lyon to join men's basketball's 1,000-point club

November 20, 2006

NORTON, MA- Standout guard Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) became the latest Lyon to join the Wheaton College men's basketball team's 1,000-point club, and he did so during the first game of his senior campaign at last weekend's Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Plymouth State University. Against Husson College on Friday, Zukowski's 21-point effort enabled him to become the 11th player to score 1,000.

Coming off last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament championship run with 998 career points, Zukowski waited over eight months for the opportunity. Needing just the two points, he knocked down a free throw midway through the opening half and eventually surpassed the milestone with a lay-up at 7:26. Zukowski shot 10-of-12 from the free throw line, made half of his six three-point attempts, and pulled down six rebounds with three assists in Wheaton's 88-82 victory.

Ranked fourth in the NEWMAC in scoring as a junior with 17.5 points per game, Zukowski was also among the conference's average leaders in assists (2.9), steals (1.7), rebounds (5.3) and three-pointers (2.3), as well as three-point field goal percentage (.364) and free throw percentage (.783). A two-time NEWMAC All-Conference selection, Zukowski became just the fourth Lyon to record 500 points in a season.

Helping lead the Blue and White to its second straight ECAC Tournament championship during the 2005-06 season, Zukowski turned in one of the program's top all-around performances. His numbers placed him fourth in the team's record book for three-pointers made in a season, fifth in points and free throws made, tied for eighth in steals, ninth in assists and 10th in field goals. At Rhode Island College in the ECAC Tournament final, Zukowski became just the third Wheaton player to make at least seven threes in a game.

Zukowski, who is Wheaton's lone senior and captain, has played a prominent role in the program's success stories over the last three years. He has helped lead the Lyons to back-to-back ECAC crowns, three straight ECAC Tournament finals appearances and an average of 19 wins per season.

With nearly a full season ahead of him, Zukowski stands 10th on Wheaton's all-time scoring list with 1,036 points, just two points out of ninth and 52 out of sixth. With another 500-point season, he could move to as high as fourth in the program's annals. Zukowski averages 13.0 points for his career, and he has already broken into Wheaton's top 10 in career free throws made, three-pointers made, assists and steals.
