Kelly continues to rewrite men's basketball record book with 1,000th point

March 3, 2006

NORTON, MA- Senior standout Sean Kelly (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) continued to rewrite the Wheaton College men's basketball record book during Wednesday night's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament victory over Emmanuel College, as the four-year point guard turned in a game-best 26-point performance to become the program's 10th player to record 1,000 points.

Unsure of whether Kelly would be given an opportunity to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone following last weekend's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal round loss to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Wheaton received a call Monday morning notifying the team it would have a chance to defend its ECAC title.

Entering Wednesday night's opening round against number-three seed Emmanuel needing 11 points to reach the milestone, Kelly led sixth-seeded Wheaton to a 17-point home victory after shooting 8-of-15 from the field with six rebounds and game-high totals of five assists and five steals. Kelly scored his 1,000th point in dramatic fashion, corralling a loose ball and converting the ensuing breakaway lay-up just before the halftime buzzer sounded to give the Lyons a 47-33 lead at the break.

Leading the NEWMAC in both steals and assists per game at 6.2 and 3.5, respectively, as of Monday, Kelly also stood third and 10th nationally in those categories. Kelly is among the conference's elite in scoring and rebounding, ranking 11th with 12.5 points per game and 15th with 4.7 boards per contest.

Kelly played an integral part in Wheaton's most successful stretch in program history, including leading the Lyons to their fourth successive ECAC Tournament and fourth straight 17-win season. Wheaton enters Friday night's tournament semifinal game against conference foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with an overall record of 17-10.

Standing seventh in Wheaton's annals with 104 games played, Kelly averages 9.8 points for his career and is a mere three points away from moving into the ninth position on the school's all-time scoring list. Needing 41 points to become Wheaton's eighth all-time leading scorer, Kelly has already shattered both the career assists and steals marks. Additionally, he ranks fifth in free throws made.
