Kelly and Zukowski draw NEWMAC All-Conference team selectionsFebruary 28, 2006 WORCESTER, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball senior Sean Kelly (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) and junior Brian Zukowski (Dracut, MA/Dracut) each drew New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference honors for the second straight season, it was announced during Tuesday's postseason meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Similar to last year, Kelly was placed on the first team and Zukowski earned a second team nod. Kelly, who was named NEWMAC Co-Player of the Week after the first week of the regular season and earned the honor outright during the final week of the regular season, has led the conference in assists (161) and steals (92) all season. The point guard, one of Wheaton's tri-captains, also ranks 11th in the league in scoring (12.5) and 15th in rebounding (4.7). Kelly has rattled off at least six assists on 17 occasions and four-plus steals 12 times. Through games of February 26, Kelly was third among Division III players in steals and 10th in assists. Earlier this season, Kelly became Wheaton's career assists and steals leader. On January 28, he became the first male or female player at the college to amass 500 career assists. Kelly has already eclipsed his own single-season program record for steals and stands 11 assists shy of matching his helpers mark. He currently needs 11 points to become the 10th Wheaton player with 1,000 in a career and is tied for seventh in program history by having played 103 games. Zukowski, a 6-foot guard who leads Wheaton in scoring (16.7) and rebounding (5.7), is fourth in the NEWMAC in scoring and is the shortest player among the top 10 in boards, as he's currently ninth. He's also fourth in the league in three-pointers (52), seventh in steals (43), tied for seventh in assists (78) and ninth in three-point percentage (32.7). The tri-captain has gone for double-digit scoring 23 times in 26 games this season, including a career-high tying 29 against Springfield College in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament. Zukowski corralled three double-doubles this season and nabbed at least five rebounds 17 times. He also scored 15 points or more 16 times and is closing in on 1,000 points for his career, needing 75 to reach the milestone. With 435 points this season, Zukowski is 12 points shy of reaching the program's single-season top 10 and, by going 101-of-135 from the charity stripe, is eighth in free throws made. Wheaton's upperclassman duo has helped the Lyons to a 16-10 mark and the sixth seed in the upcoming eight-team Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. The Blue and White opens defense of its 2005 ECAC Tournament title by playing host to third-seeded Emmanuel College tomorrow at Emerson Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
