Kelly earns spot on D3hoops.com Team of the WeekFebruary 22, 2006 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's basketball standout Sean Kelly (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, February 19. The accolade comes the same week Kelly earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week honors. The senior point guard averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 assists, 6.0 steals and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of conference games last week. Wheaton's tri-captain hit 53.8 percent of his shots, including 62.5 percent from beyond the arc. In last Tuesday's 75-73 loss to the United States Coast Guard Academy, Kelly broke his own single-season program record for steals with four in addition to tallying 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with seven assists and five rebounds. In helping the Lyons clinch the NEWMAC Tournament's fourth seed during Saturday's 74-63 victory over Babson College, Kelly posted a career-high 28 points while matching his career and season best of eight steals. His steals total tied for second highest among all Division III players this season. Kelly also went 2-of-4 on three-point field goal attempts and 12-of-17 from the charity stripe to go along with six assists and five boards. During the Lyons' 82-78 win over Springfield College in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Tuesday, Kelly moved into 10th in program history with 982 career points. He's closing in on becoming just the 10th member of Wheaton's 1,000-point club and paces the conference in both assists and steals per game, while ranking 11th in scoring and 15th in rebounding. Kelly has been the catalyst behind Wheaton's 16-9 overall mark and 6-6 conference record, ranking second nationally among Division III men's players in steals and eighth in assists. With 92 steals, he's threatening to become just the third player among the NCAA's three divisions to hit triple digits this season. Kelly and the Lyons travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. affair. The contest is a rematch of last season's NEWMAC championship game, which the Engineers won, 64-60. The teams split during the regular season, with WPI taking an 82-77 decision at home before the Blue and White downed the then-nationally-ranked Engineers, 64-62 at Emerson Gymnasium on February 8.
