Kelly tabbed NEWMAC men's hoops player of the week for second timeFebruary 20, 2006
Kelly had an outstanding week as he averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 assists, 6.0 steals and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of conference games. The senior point guard made 53.8 percent of his shots from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point range. In Tuesday's 75-73 loss to the United States Coast Guard Academy, Kelly broke his Wheaton single-season steals record with four in addition to tallying 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with seven assists and five rebounds. Helping the Lyons clinch the NEWMAC Tournament's fourth seed during Saturday's 74-63 victory over Babson College, Kelly posted a career-high 28 points while matching his career best of eight steals. He also knocked down 50 percent of his four three-point field goal attempts and 70.6 percent of his 17 free throw attempts to go along with six assists and five boards. Entering the NEWMAC Tournament, Kelly is 29 points away from becoming the 10th member of Wheaton's 1,000-point club. He currently paces the conference in both assists and steals per game and ranks 11th in scoring and 15th in rebounding. Kelly has been the driving force behind Wheaton's 15-9 overall mark and 6-6 conference record, ranking third nationally among Division III men's players in steals and eighth in assists. He'll lead the Lyons against Springfield College in tomorrow's first round, where Wheaton has advanced to the semifinals in six of the last seven seasons.
