Foote draws second ESPN The Magazine academic all-district honor

May 8, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College baseball junior Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic College Division All-District I second team for the second straight season, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Foote, who is majoring in mathematics and economics, has recorded a 3.73 cumulative grade-point average while playing an integral role in the success of the nationally-ranked Lyons, who enter their eighth NCAA Tournament in nine years with a 32-8 mark. As one of four second-team outfielders, Foote was among 23 players who attained academic all-district status, and one of three from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

As Wheaton's starting right fielder for the second straight season, Foote has posted a .370 batting average while committing just one miscue in 50 chances. He is second on the squad in doubles (12) and slugging percentage (.519), third in average and fourth in RBI (25) while striking out only eight times in 152 plate appearances. Foote has played in 38 of 40 games, drawing 35 starts, and has recorded 23 runs while hitting a pair of home runs. Among all NEWMAC players, he ranks in the top nine in five offensive categories.

Foote, who has earned Dean's List accolades at Wheaton and drew his second straight NEWMAC Academic All-Conference laurel this spring, landed on the all-conference first team this year, receiving an athletic accolade for the initial time. Foote became the first player in program history to earn an all-district nod last season.

Wheaton corralled its ninth NEWMAC Tournament title in the league's 10-year history, thanks in part to Foote, as the Lyons have gone 108-31 during his career, including 39-7 against league foes. He has also helped the Blue and White capture a pair of regular season conference crowns, as well as finish second nationally at the 2006 College World Series.

The Lyons are ranked 11th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and await word early next week on who they will play in the NCAA Tournament.

The District I College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec. To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
