Wheaton matches season high in runs, notches 20-3 non-conference win

April 19, 2008

NORTON, MA- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College baseball team tied a season high in runs while scoring in six different innings on Saturday, as the Lyons defeated Brandeis University, 20-3 in non-conference action at Sidell Stadium. Wheaton, which sits ninth in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll, improved to 26-7, winning for the 24th time in its last 27 games. The Judges saw their record even up at 12-12.

Wheaton strung together a five-run rally in the second inning, plating each of its runs after the first two batters of the frame had been retired. Sophomore Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) and senior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) punched back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0 before classmate Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) launched a three-run homer beyond the left field fence.

Sophomore Sean Buckley (Webster, MA/Bartlett) upped Wheaton's lead to six with a squeeze in the third before classmate Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) smacked a two-out RBI double the next inning.

The Lyons doubled their lead to 14-0 thanks to a seven-run fifth, as they recorded five hits and were aided by two errors. Senior Ken Depasse's (Holden, MA/Saint John's) groundout brought the first run home before Malaguti and Guillerault each knocked RBI singles. Lieneck and junior Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) later rapped consecutive run-scoring base hits, classmate Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) poked a sacrifice fly, and the final run came around on an outfield error with two down.

Wheaton added three runs in each the seventh and eighth innings. Freshmen Scott Ciccone (Malden, MA/Arlington Catholic) and Tad Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH/Holderness School) both had RBI singles in the seventh, while Yagjian plated another run on a groundout. The following frame, Skelley and sophomore Marshall Chick (Bowdoinham, ME/Mount Ararat) recorded run-scoring base hits, and Yagjian brought home the final run.

Junior Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) tossed six shutout innings for the Lyons, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out one batter. With Hughes on the hill, Wheaton's defense spun double plays in each the first and third frames before turning another twin killing in the seventh. Brandeis scored its first run on sophomore Drake Livada's (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) eighth-inning groundout and plated two more with two down in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter, respectively.

Guillerault finished 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI, doubling and homering, while Yagjian had three hits, three runs and three RBI. Lieneck and Malaguti each finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI, Skelley was 2-for-3 with two RBI off the bench, and freshman reserves Nick Alosco (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) each walked twice and scored two runs. Depasse was twice hit by a pitch. In relief of Hughes, freshman Kevin Calabro (Andover, MA/Andover) yielded one run on two hits in two innings, while junior Karl Olson (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) allowed a pair of unearned runs during a one-hit ninth.

Sophomore James Likis (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin School) and freshman Tony Deshler (Pepperell, MA/Lawrence Academy) each had two hits for Brandeis, with Deshler walking twice, doubling and driving in a run. Senior Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill) drew three bases on balls. On the hill, freshman Justin Duncombe (Canyon Country, CA/Canyon) suffered his first loss of the year, as four Judge hurlers combined to yield 19 earned runs on 18 hits with nine walks and three strikeouts.

Wheaton turns right around and completes a stretch of four games in as many days tomorrow when it travels to University of Southern Maine for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
