Wheaton baseball engages in White Ribbon Campaign, hosts youth clinicApril 16, 2008 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College baseball team is preparing to promote awareness for the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) on Saturday when the Lyons host Brandeis University in Sidell Stadium at 12:00 p.m. The WRC is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. Wheaton, which is expanding WRC's mission to include children, is also planning to host a clinic for over 100 Little Leaguers from Norton Youth Baseball following the game. During the game, Wheaton and Brandeis players will don blue wristbands depicting an image of a white ribbon in recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The white ribbon symbolizes a man's pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. The teams will also sign a poster-sized pledge sheet that will be prominently displayed on the back of the Wheaton dugout. Additionally, the KLMC Quad, which is made up of Kilham, Larcom, Metcalf and Chapin halls on upper campus, will be handing out free white ribbons and selling wristbands along with food and beverages at a concession tent located behind the press box. All proceeds will be donated to the New Hope Shelter in Attleboro. The WRC is recognized in over 55 countries with campaigns led by men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys. It began in 1991, when a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out about violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon symbolizes opposition to violence against women. Saturday's WRC event is sponsored by Wheaton's Office of Student Life, Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and Department of Athletics. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
