McDonough's weekend outing leads to NEWMAC's top weekly honor

March 24, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College baseball standout Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) was selected New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season for the week ending on Sunday, March 23. The honor is the fifth of his career, as the senior southpaw won it twice in each his sophomore and junior seasons.

McDonough spun his third career shutout during Saturday's conference-opening win at the United States Coast Guard Academy. He scattered seven hits in a 1-0 victory, fanning three batters and walking none. McDonough set down 11 of his final 12 batters while allowing just one Coast Guard runner past second base. He faced six batters over the minimum.

McDonough, who is the program's all-time strikeouts leader and just four shy of 200, is also tied for first in career complete games (10). He stands third in shutouts, fourth in innings pitched (217) and fifth in wins (18).

Wheaton is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference game at Brandeis University at 3:30 p.m. Winners of seven straight games and owners of a 9-4 record, the Lyons are ranked 13th in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
