Lieneck named NEWMAC Player of the Week for first time

March 17, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College baseball standout Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 16. In his first season as a regular in Wheaton's lineup, the sophomore earned his initial college honor.

Lieneck batted a team-best .436 to lead the Lyons to a 6-4 record in Arizona, as Wheaton played eight games against 2007 NCAA Tournament participants, including seven that are either nationally ranked or receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.

Wheaton's starting catcher had at least one hit in each of the first nine games, going 17-for-39 with 11 runs, nine RBI, three doubles, one home run, five walks and three stolen bases. He slugged .590 with a .500 on-base percentage and fielded at a .988 clip.

In his first at bat of the season on March 8, Lieneck launched a two-run homer against 14th-ranked The College of New Jersey, swatting his first collegiate dinger. Lieneck amassed three hits in four different games, including batting 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases against second-ranked Cortland State College on Tuesday.

During the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, Lieneck went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double against Webster University before going 3-for-5 with three runs versus Hope College on Friday. The following day, Lieneck batted 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double and a sacrifice fly against Montclair State University.

Wheaton, which won its final four games in Arizona, was ranked 13th in Collegiate Baseball's preseason national poll. The Lyons open their northern schedule on Thursday, traveling to Rhode Island College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
