Martin rejoins professional baseball ranks after signing with Brockton Rox

August 7, 2007

NORTON, MA- Former Wheaton College baseball pitcher Chris Martin (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) rejoined the professional ranks after signing with local independent league team Brockton Rox of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball. After graduating in 2006, Martin reached terms with the Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

With the Pelicans in 2006, the righthander turned in a 1-1 record with a 4.96 earned run average. He appeared in 10 games, pitched 16.1 innings and struck out seven batters. Martin and 2006 Wheaton graduate Jamie Baker (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional), who pitches for the North Shore Spirit, are the two former Lyons playing in the Can-Am League.

A four-year pitcher at Wheaton, Martin finished his career in a Lyon uniform with a 14-7 record. Among the program's all-time wins leaders, he also stands in the top 10 for complete games, innings pitched, shutouts and strikeouts. Named to the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) all-league second team, Martin played on three NCAA Tournament teams and a trio of NEWMAC Tournament championship squads.

In the spring of 2006, Martin played a significant role in helping steer Wheaton to the national championship game in Wisconsin. That team secured the program's most successful season in its 10-year history, one that included an all-time-high 42 victories, its first NCAA New England Tournament crown, an eighth successive regular season conference title and a seventh league tournament championship.

Martin had a breakout senior season after registering career-best totals of seven wins, a 2.54 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 71 innings. He fired two complete-game shutouts in 11 starts, holding opposing hitters to a .212 batting average while going at least six innings and surrendering zero earned runs during five starts.

Brockton hosts North Shore tonight at 7:05 p.m. North Shore brings a league-best 15-5 second-half record into Campanelli Stadium, sitting three games in front of second-place Atlantic City and New Haven County, while the Rox are seven back of the Spirit with an 8-12 mark. The two teams will play six times over the next nine days.
