Laplante's home run at Fenway helps lift College Division to all-star win

July 23, 2007

NORTON, MA- Former Wheaton College baseball catcher and 2007 graduate Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) made his final swing in a Lyon uniform a memorable one during Sunday's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star game at Fenway Park, lifting a solo home run into the Green Monster seats in left field to help give the College Division a 2-0 victory over the University Division.

Laplante's one-out roundtripper in the bottom of the seventh inning was one of just two hits on the night for the Division II-III All-Stars, who defeated their Division I counterparts for the third time in the last five seasons. Winning for the 10th time overall, the College Division used eight pitchers to combine for the four-hit shutout.

A late addition to the College team's roster, Laplante took advantage of the opportunity, entering the game in the top of the sixth as a defensive replacement. He recorded three putouts behind the dish in the last four innings, helping complete the outing with a strikeout for the game's final out.

Laplante, who became the fifth Wheaton player to sign a professional contract when he agreed to terms with the Nashua Pride of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball in May, played the all-star game with his college coaches in the dugout.

Due to being named NEIBA Division III Coach of the Year in mid-May, Wheaton skipper Eric Podbelski had the honor of helping coach the College Division team. He was joined by assistant coaches Ryan Parker '01, Zach Brown '02, Jeff Ambrosini '04 and Andy Koocher '06.

The game can be viewed in its entirety via the archives page of D3Cast at d3cast.com.
