Foote and McDonough cap NEWMAC baseball season with awards sweepApril 30, 2007 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College baseball standouts Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) capped the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with a sweep of the weekly hitter and pitcher laurels for the week ending on Sunday, April 29.
A sophomore right fielder, Foote went 9-for-19 for a .474 average with four RBI and three runs. He also slugged .684 thanks to a home run and double. In the championship game against Babson College, Foote scored the game-tying run in the second inning after going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a semifinal victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He added two hits and a run during Wheaton's tournament opener with Babson. Earlier in the week, Foote was 2-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI in a win versus 11th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University. He also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI against Rhode Island College on Tuesday. Foote is third in the NEWMAC in hitting with a .406 batting average, tied for fourth in RBI with 27, tied for fifth in home runs with three, tied for seventh in triples with two and tied for eighth in runs with 26.
McDonough paces the NEWMAC in earned run average at a miniscule 1.50 clip. He also ranks fourth with 50 strikeouts and is tied for fourth with five wins. Among pitchers with at least six decisions, McDonough is tied for fourth with an .833 winning percentage. The Lyons will play their final week of the regular season beginning with Tuesday's home game against the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m. Wheaton travels to Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday and the University of Southern Maine on Friday before hosting Western New England College in a doubleheader on Saturday.
