Profile
John Sutyak was promoted to Wheaton's associate director of athletics in January 2008 after having served as the department's assistant athletic director since July 2006.
Sutyak's position has evolved in a short period of time, as he now oversees seven varsity teams as well as Wheaton's club sport and intramural programs. Charged with managing the assistant coaches' salary budget, Sutyak was instrumental in the implementation of the Lyons Athletic Club (LAC), an alliance formed in 2006 between the college's athletic programs and boosters that help provide financial support for Wheaton athletics.
Overseeing the Wheaton Athletic Mentors (WAMs), the department's student-athlete advisory committee, Sutyak is also responsible for academic achievement, championships, game management, officiating and work-study.
Sutyak is highly involved on campus, serving on the Wheaton Initiative for Leadership Learning (WILL), Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), Broadening Diversity Among Scholar Athletes Committee and First-Year Experience Committee. Other committee assignments include Community Day, Homecoming, Orientation and Wellness Day.
Outside of Wheaton, Sutyak serves as the NCAA New England chair for softball and women's basketball liaison for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and is a member of the NEWMAC Championships, Officiating and Scheduling committees. Sutyak also belongs to the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) Jostens Community Service Award Selection Committee.
Prior to being hired in 2006, Sutyak served in different capacities on Yale University's administrative team for three years. Before being elevated to assistant for athletic facilities and varsity sports operations, he was the assistant varsity sports and facilities administrator for a year after interning in the varsity sports office in 2003-04. Sutyak also served on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I softball tournament selection committee and the Ivy League Sportsmanship Committee.
During the 2002-03 academic year, Sutyak worked in a dual role as Wheaton's assistant sports information director and an area coordinator after earning his master's degree in athletic administration in 2002 from Springfield College, where he served as a teaching assistant in the sport management department and student assistant with the athletic department. He also had a two-year stint as the assistant baseball coach at Western New England College.
A Scarborough, Maine, native, Sutyak is a 2000 Wheaton graduate and former four-year baseball player with the Lyons. He secured his bachelor's degree in American history with a minor in religious studies. In addition to interning with Wheaton Executive Director of Athletics Chad Yowell as an undergraduate, Sutyak was a member of Wheaton's inaugural baseball team from the spring of 1997, while playing during the squad's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000.
