The Green Campaign

Wheaton is taking action to become environmentally sustainable at the operational level.

For example, it instituted a paperless payroll system this fall. The email payroll statement system not only eliminates the use of envelopes and paper, but it also saves staff time in distributing statements and allows for more timely notification of pay information.

In another recent change, the newest vehicle in Wheaton's Public Safety fleet is a hybrid Ford Escape. With student help, the department is also exploring alternative fuels for the rest of its vehicles.

Environmental sustainability served as a theme for this year's summer reading for first-year students, who read and discussed Michael Pollan's book, The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Student interest in the issue of environmental sustainability has been a topic of discussion at the Board of Trustees' meetings with the Student Affairs committee. In fact, those conversations led to the establishment of a committee of students, faculty and staff to promote sustainability measures on campus.

Finally, students' commitment to environmental conservation is reflected in the theme residence, ECCO (environmentally conscious and community-oriented) House, in which residents practice a "green" lifestyle and plan events to promote conservation on campus.
