Required Credentials for Non-U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Residents
Certification of finances
(non-U.S. citizens only)
Applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States must submit a Certification of Finances form, or bank statement indicating the amount, in US dollars, available to support their educational expenses. Please include all sources of support you intend to use. This information is required of all non-US citizens, regardless of whether or not you will be seeking need-based financial aid.
English Proficiency
(non-native English speakers only)
Applicants for whom English is not the first language must submit scores earned on the TOEFL or IELTS. A score of at least 237 on the computer-based TOEFL, 580 on the paper-based TOEFL or 90 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) is the recommended minimum score for admission. TOEFL is the preferred test, but candidates who prove their proficiency through other means will not be penalized. A score of 7 or higher on the IELTS is the recommended minimum score for admission.
Non-native English speakers who have been studying entirely in English throughout secondary school, with no ESL support, may request a waiver of the English proficiency requirement. Requests should be made in writing or via e-mail at admission@wheatoncollege.edu after submitting the application for admission. Waivers will not be granted prior to the receipt of application.
The ETS code for sending your scores to Wheaton is 3963.
Application for admission, application fee
Please complete the Common Application and the Supplement to the Common Application and return it to the Office of Admission.
The application fee for freshman candidates who apply online is waived through January 5, 2010.
Fill in the co-curricular and employment sections of the application. Even if you plan to submit a personal resume, you must also complete this portion of the application.
Please remember to write or type your name and date of birth on every credential submitted as part of your application.
Supplement to the Common Application
You also must fill out the Wheaton Supplement to the Common Application. You will find the supplement posted on the Wheaton Web site at www.wheatoncollege.edu/admission/apply/online.html and the Common Application Web site at www.commonapp.org.
Academic writing sample
In addition to the Personal Statement, you must submit a graded writing sample as part of the application. The Writing Sample is a copy of an analytical paper, in English, that you have written within the last year, including the grade you received and the teacher's comments.
The Admission Office recognizes that candidates who do not attend international/American/English medium schools may not have a paper that meets these requirements; such students are asked to submit two Personal Statements/essays, choosing from the topics offered on the Common Application. Please clearly indicate that one of the submissions is the in lieu of the Graded Writing Sample. This opportunity is not available to students studying in English medium schools.
Secondary School Report, academic transcripts and Midyear Report
After completing the candidate's section, ask a school official to submit the Secondary School Report form, which is part of the Common Application. An official copy of your high school transcript, including official translation, must accompany the Secondary School Report. Candidates are responsible for making sure that an official midyear transcript is sent as soon as it is available. The Final Report should be submitted by students who have already graduated from high school.
Please note that the Admission Committee will not review any applications without grades from at least the first term of the candidate's final year of secondary school.
SAT Subject and Reasoning Tests (Optional for All Applicants)
Submission of SAT Subject and Reasoning Tests is an optional part of the Wheaton admission process. The Admission Committee places primary emphasis on secondary school performance, English proficiency, writing skills and letters of recommendation when making admission decisions. Therefore, each applicant should indicate his/her choice on the Optional Standardized Testing section of the Wheaton Supplement to the Common Application. Students wishing to have their scores considered should complete all testing before February 1.
All first-year applicants are eligible for merit scholarships and financial aid, even if they do not submit SAT results.
Teacher Evaluations
Please complete the top section of each form and ask two of your instructors to complete and return them directly to the Office of Admission (or to you in a sealed envelope) by the appropriate application deadline date. Recommendations should be from instructors who taught you in academic subjects during the last 2 years of high school.
Transfer students
In addition to the items listed above, transfer applicants should submit final high school transcripts, as well as official transcripts from all colleges attended.
