Independent Major: African Diaspora Studies

Why Wheaton?
I was very interested in business and thought I wanted to major in it. Wheaton has a five-year business program where you do three years here as an economics major, and then you move on to a university, such as the University of Rochester, to complete your MBA.

Finding a major...
Macroeconomics just wasn't cutting it for me. So I enrolled in an introductory sociology class and was bitten by the sociology bug. Even though I got really into sociology, I felt like something was missing. With the help of Professor Michelle Harris, I was able to craft an independent major called African Diaspora Studies. So that, coupled with sociology and a minor in economics, I've gotten the most out of my educational experience.

Favorite campus moment...
Last spring, when Voice United to Jam - we're a gospel and R&B group on campus - had our jam. When we started out three years ago, we were very small and didn't have lots of fans. At the concert, we had the Chapel jam-packed and it was just such a blast.

About pursuing your passions...
I have multiple interests, and I believe in feeding all of them. Wheaton has been able to support all those passions, every last one of them, and that has been as a result of hard work. And with that kind of motivation, coupled with the exceptional support Wheaton provides, it has served me well. I hope to pursue graduate studies. I'm thinking about divinity school or teaching programs, and also thinking about a Ph.D. in Sociology. And Wheaton has taught me that I can pursue them wholeheartedly.
