The America*Reads Challenge

Reading Tutors for Young Children (First - Third Grades)

Join Wheaton College's response to the America*Reads Challenge, a national program which strives to ensure that each and every American child can read well and independently by the end of third grade. Choose from local after-school program settings (including public libraries) that offer individual and small group tutoring for young children.

Duties vary with location and may include materials/environment preparation, record keeping, and other program development activities. All program centers are committed to building supportive environments where children can build a positive attitude towards literacy and language. In return, all tutors will need to commit to working to involve children actively in meaningful, functional language experiences, including speaking, listening, writing, and reading. All responsibilities must be approached with sensitivity to cultural backgrounds and needs. Training, supervision, evaluation, and transportation are provided. These positions are open to students from all academic departments. Previous tutoring experience is preferred.

Requirements: Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study Funds (FWS)

Hours: 6-10 Hours per week
Two 3-hour afternoon blocks of time per week are required.
Positions begin in early October with paid training provided.
