Process for Completing Direct Stafford and Perkins Loan Applications

Applying for a federal student loan for the first time? The following instructions are for students who have been awarded a federal Direct Stafford loan and/or federal Perkins loan from Wheaton College for the first time. Please note that your loan will not be credited to your student account until all loan requirements are completed in full. If you have been awarded both a federal Direct Stafford loan and a federal Perkins loan, you must complete a separate loan application process for each loan as outlined below.

Not sure if you have been awarded a federal student loan? New students may view their financial aid award through insideWheaton, by clicking on the WINDOW link and selecting Student and Financial Records. Returning students may use the WINDOW link from Wheaton's home page, or may click here to log in using their Window PIN. Please note that new students are no longer issued WINDOW PIN's and must use the inside.Wheaton portal to access their WINDOW account information.

Federal Direct Stafford Loan Application Process:

Before a student can complete the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note and Federal Direct Stafford Loan Entrance Interview, the loan must be originated by the Office of Student Financial Services. Students will be notified via their Wheaton e-mail account during the first several weeks of June with detailed instructions on how to complete the promissory note and entrance counseling session. The process is detailed below and students must complete both components of the application process in order to receive their Federal Direct Stafford Loan proceeds. NOTE: Failure to complete the application process within 30 days of receipt of the notification may result in the delay or forfeiture of the student loan proceeds.

1.)                 Direct Loan Entrance Counseling is a federal requirement for all students borrowing a Federal Direct Loan for the first time at Wheaton College. Students are required to complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling before the proceeds from the Direct Loan can be disbursed to the student account.

To complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling, click below and follow the instructions. Once the entrance interview has been completed, do not forget to choose Wheaton College in Massachusetts so your confirmation is forwarded to us.

2.)                 The Direct Stafford Loan Promissory Note is a legally binding agreement to repay the student loan. This agreement is between the student and the Department of Education. A parent cannot complete the Direct Stafford Loan promissory note (or entrance interview) on the student‚s behalf. Please note that Direct Loan funds will not be disbursed to your student account until you have completed the Entrance Counseling requirement, the Direct Loan promissory note and received confirmation from the Department of Education that both requirements have been satisfactorily completed.

If you have any questions regarding either the completion of Direct Loan Entrance Counseling or the Direct Loans program at Wheaton College, contact the Office of Student Financial Services at (508) 286-8232 or e-mail us at sfs@wheatonma.edu. If you would like individual loan counseling, you may call the office to schedule an appointment with a financial aid counselor.

Federal Perkins Loan Application Process:

1.         Complete your Federal Perkins Loan Interview Questionnaire, Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Truth-In-Lending Confirmation

If you have been awarded a Federal Perkins Loan, you will receive an email from Wheaton's Federal Perkins loan servicer, Campus Partners, directing you to their iPromise online service. This notice will be sent to your wheatoncollege.edu email account. Upon receipt, please go to the Campus Partners iPromise link and follow the instructions to complete the Loan Interview Questionnaire, Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note and Truth-In-Lending Confirmation. You do not choose a lender for your Federal Perkins loan as Wheaton College is the lender.

Remember, if you will receive both a Federal Stafford and Federal Perkins loan for the first time, you must complete a separate loan application process for each loan.

Other Important Loan Information:

If you do not plan to borrow your Federal Direct Stafford Loan and/or Federal Perkins loan for the current academic year, please notify our office in writing.

We encourage all borrowers to complete their loan process as soon as possible. If you do not complete all of your loan requirements, we will assume you do not wish to borrow and your loan(s) will be canceled.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Financial Services at (508) 286-8232, if you have any questions regarding this process.
