II.  Focus Questions:

1.  Which of the general characteristics of an indigenous religion described in Chapter 2 are
evident in Shinto and what specific form do they take?

2.  How might industrialization and urbanization affect the contemporary continuing practice
           of Shinto in Japan?

3.  Generally speaking, do people in the United States reverence nature?  Could Shinto be
practiced today in the United States?  If so, what form could it take?  When
answering/discussing this question keep in mind how the Japanese land itself is
intimately related to Shinto, e.g., how many of us live near enough to a natural waterfall
to use it in the Shinto purification ritual?
