Dale's dispatches from Kalmykia

Spring 2006

Former Wheaton president Dale Rogers Marshall spent the spring 2006 semester as a Fulbright scholar in the Russian Republic of Kalmykia, where taught American history, government and culture at Kalmyk State University in the capital city of Elista. Dale traveled there with her husband Don, who also taught at the university. After Dale's retirement from Wheaton in 2004, the Marshalls returned to their family home in the San Francisco Bay area.

Kalmykia is a largely Buddhist republic in the midst of European Russia. Dale Marshall was the first Fulbright Scholar to be assigned to the area. In 10 letters to the Wheaton community, she shared her informal reflections on this fascinating experience.

February 3: Elista is fascinating
February 15: Classes have started in Kalmykia State
February 19: Of palaces and apartments
February 24: Of coatrooms, mirrors, and chocolates
March 5: The bells are ringing again
March 18: Don't call them women
April 3: Radio China, Radio Turkey, Radio Germany
April 24: Wild tulips on the Russian steppes
May 12: Buddha, cell phones and a lama at lunch
