Alternate Break Program
Tired of spending your college break the same way, year after year? Why not try it the SSSR way by participating in one of the Alternative Break Trips?
What are Alternate Break Trips?
Alternate Break trips are one week long trips, during the winter or spring break, where a group of students and faculty/staff members travel to a designated location in order to complete a service project, immerse themselves into diverse communities, and to learn from those around them as well as learn about themselves.
2009 Trip Locations:
Winter Break: New Orleans, LA ~ Disaster Relief
For the past few years, each winter, a group of Wheaton students travel to New Orleans to aid in rebuilding the destruction from Hurricane Katrina/Rita. Our mission is not yet complete for the devastation of these two storms is still felt. The students at Wheaton made a commitment to see this project through to the end, and this year will be no different. Once more the school will return to help heal the scars of the land.
Spring Break: South Carolina:
The Gullah culture starts with the transportation of African slaves to the Sea Island at South Carolina, and surrounding areas. They brought with them their language, culture, and traditions that are now verging on extinction due to the resort mentality taking over much of their lands, and leaving them homeless. In the spring, Wheaton plans on going to South Carolina to learn more about the Gullah and participate in a service project.
Expected Costs:
With some creative fundraising the goal is to make the trip FREE. The most students will have to cover, if fundraising goals are not met, is $100-200 with some scholarship opportunities available.
Look out for more information and trip applications in early September!
