Sanctions for Violations of Fire Safety Regulations
The purpose of Wheaton's fire safety policy is to create a safe campus, free of fire and the risk of fire. Any violation of fire safety regulations places all members of the community at risk and will result in the following sanctions. Individuals may appeal a sanction issued by the Director of Student Life to the Dean or Associate Dean of Students.
1st Level Offense
Possession of materials which may cause a fire, including but not limited to:
Halogen lamps, candles, incense. Covering smoke or heat sensors with tapestries, paper, etc. Violation of housing policies with regard to electronic equipment, extension cords and other devices which are potential fire hazards.
Sanction
Violators are required to view the fire safety movie. Students who view the movie will pay a fine of $25. Failure to see the movie will result in a $50 fine.
2nd Level Offense
Activities which are considered reckless and endangering, including but not limited to: tampering with fire safety equipment, causing a false alarm, starting a fire. Any repetition of Level 1 offenses.
Sanction
$100 fine and housing probation. Individuals who cause a false fire alarm will also be fined by the Norton Fire Department.
3rd Level Offense
Endangering the lives of members of the community by continuing to participate in the above outlined behaviors. Intentional starting of fires, bomb threats, pulling a fire alarm.
Sanction
Loss of housing and/or referral to the College Hearing Board. Individuals who pull a false fire alarm will be fined by the Norton Fire Department.
