Black History Month

Black History Month celebrates and honors the many cultures, contributions and rich history of the people from the African Diaspora. Our schedule of events below is a mix educational with social, and includes pieces of African, African American, and Afro-Caribbean art, literature, music, dance, history, spirituality, and the examination of Black identity and its intersection with other pieces of one's identity.

African Drumming
Monday, February 2 * 5:30PM * Emerson Dining Hall
Kick off Black History Month with a bang! Join Kofi Donkor of Sankofa African Drum and Dance Ensemble as he creates an atmosphere of an indigenous African village through his drumming.

Race, Sexual Orientation, & Politics in Cambridge

Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons will discuss her experiences as an openly gay, black elected official - on what her identity means to her, expectations put on her, and much more.  Mayor Simmons will also speak about her involvement in the marriage equality movement in Massachusetts.  

Black Female Image: A Look at the History, Media, & Complexity of Womanhood

Join Wheaton women students, staff, and faculty for a conversation about what it has meant and means today to be a black woman in American society.

On the Outskirts: Race & Disability Issues
Monday, February 16 * 5:30PM * Knapton Lecture
Join us for this important discussion, led by Leroy Moore, Jr., a disabled African American writer, poet, community activist and feminist. Moore founded the Disability Advocates of Minorities Organization (DAMO) and is one of the leading voices in the field of race and disability.

Iyeoka and the Black & Blues Tribe
Thursday, February 19 * 10:00PM * The Loft, Balfour-Hood Campus Center
A Nigerian-American poet and singer of the top ten "slammers" in the country; Iyeoka combines her vocals, writing and theater background with music at her performances to touch on issues of love, women, culture and relationships.

BACCHUS presents Cadillac Records - a film which follows the exciting but turbulent lives of some of America's musical legends, including Muddy Waters, Leonard Chess, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry.

Byron Hurt: On Gender, Race, Sex, Violence, & Masculinity in Hip Hop

Byron Hurt will lecture about the issues related to gender, race, sex, violence, and masculinity in Hip Hop.

Steel Band Workshop & Performance

A performance and workshop by and with Wheaton's very own Steel Band student group.
