Black History Month

Black History Month celebrates and honors the many cultures, contributions and rich history of the people from the African Diaspora. Our schedule of events below is a mix educational with social, and includes pieces of African, African American, and Afro-Caribbean art, literature, music, dance, history, spirituality, and the examination of Black identity and its intersection with other pieces of one's identity.

West African Dance Class

West African Dance with Seydou Coulibaly and Issa Coulibaly, master dancer and drummer of the Mande tradition from Mali.
Platanos and Collard Greens
Tuesday, February 5th, 6:00PM-8:00PM, Experimental Theatre
"Can Love Between Blacks and Latinos Survive?"
A romantic comedy that thoughtfully addresses stereotypes, prejudices and urban myths that exist between African Americans and Latinos, using hip-hop, humor and satire. This event is only open to Wheaton students, faculty and staff. For ticket information, email dicent_pamela.
National Black AIDS/HIV Awareness Day Display

Behailu Bezabih

An internationally recognized Ethiopian Artist, Behailu Bezabih, presents his revolutionary work and lectures on his influences and experiences in multiple countries that brought him his success. A reception with Ethiopian cuisine precedes the presentation in the May Room.

Iyeoka and the Black & Blues Tribe

A Nigerian-American poet and singer of the top ten "slammers" in the country, Iyeoka combines her vocals, writing, and theater background with music at her performances to touch on issues of love, women, culture and relationships. Free pizza!
