Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, South Asian (APIMESA) Heritage Month

APIMESA Heritage Month celebrates and honors the many cultures and contributions of the Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and South Asian communities. Our schedule of events below is a mix educational with social, and includes literature, music, dance, history, spirituality, and the examination of the various pieces of identity.

YMCA Movie Nights
Dates: Tuesday, April 1st, Mondays the 7th and 21st
Time: 7:00 PM

Heaven and Earth, The Debut, My Son the Fanatic

Belly Dancing Classes
Date: Tuesdays in April from the 1st through the 22nd
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Place: Dance Studio, Balfour-Hood
Laura Matta will instruct on Egyptian Raqs Sharqi technique and provide context for this beautiful dance tradition.

Good Asian Drivers Tour
Date: Wednesday, April 2nd
Time: 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Place: The Loft, Balfour-Hood
Melissa Li, an Asian-American lesbian folk-rocker, and Kit Yan, a Hawaiian trans boi slam poet, are sharing their words and representing the voices that are often unheard.

Cambodian Genocide Speaker
Date: Thursday, April 3rd
Time: 5:00 PM ˆ 6:00 PM
Place: Cole Memorial Chapel
Arn Chorn-Pond, a survivor of Khmer Rouge Killing Fields of Cambodia, Founder of Children of War, and Subject of Oscar Nominated Film, will be speaking about his experiences.

Boston Providence Connection: Dim Sum
Date: Sunday, April 6th
Time: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Place: Pick Up - Meadows Parking Lot
Dim sum is a type of Chinese cuisine which involves a variety of light dishes usually served with tea. After the meal, explore more of Chinatown.

PCC Presentation
Date: Wednesday, April 9th
Time: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM (open to all of campus)
Place: Emerson Faculty Dining Room
Pinoy Computer Clinics returns to campus to present the project and showcase their photo gallery.

The Quest for Gross National Happiness
Date: Thursday, April 10th
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Place: Knapton Lecture Hall
Bhutan is ruled by the belief that "Gross national happiness is more important than gross national product." This lecture examines the influence of Buddhism in the emergence of Bhutan as a modern nation-state.

Dor: A Screening and Discussion
Date: Tuesday, April 15th
Time: 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Place: Media Center, Balfour-Hood
The screening of a touching Bollywood movie followed by a discussion led by Professor Vipan Chandra.

Bollywood Dance
Date: Friday, April 18th
Time: 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Place: Atrium, Balfour-Hood
A professional bhangra performance followed by a dance with Bollywood hits. Don't forget to visit the henna artists and eat some Indian food.

iSpeak! Showcase
Date: Saturday, April 19th
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Place: Atrium, Balfour-Hood
There will be performances of spoken word poetry with guest poets: Palestinian Def Jam Poet Tahani Salah and Urban Word NYC poet Kesed Ragin. Students will tell their stories on race, class, gender, love, school, peace, heartache, hate, war and more.

The Emancipation Network Vendor
Date: Thursday, April 24th
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Place: Atrium, Balfour-Hood
The Emancipation Network, an organization for human rights, will be selling their products which are created by woman survivors of human trafficking in Asia.

The Legacies of a Forgotten War
Date: Thursday, May 1st
Time: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Place: The Holman Room, Mary Lyon
Professor Ramsay Liem of Boston College will be speaking on his current exhibit that has traveled all over the US and Korea, on the Korean War, and about the war's lingering effects on Korea and Korean Americans today.

Holi
Date: Friday, May 2nd
Time: 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Place: Chapel Field
A Hindu holiday that traditionally celebrates the coming of spring. Water balloons and colored powder are thrown at one another. There will be traditional Indian snacks, sweets and music.
