Library Collections & Requests

The Wallace Library collections are selected to support undergraduate research at Wheaton. They include diverse subject areas and formats. For a description of these collections, including Archives and Special Collections, see our Library Collections web page.

Faculty actively participate in developing collections that directly support the curriculum. To request the purchase of a book, video, or other item for the Wallace Library collection, please use our online form or contact Gloria Barker, Director, Library Collections & Technical Services (x3723, gbarker@wheatonma.edu). For questions regarding periodical subscriptions, please contact Jean Callaghan, Serials/Electronic Resources Librarian (x3715, jcallagh@wheatonma.edu).

Finding Library Materials Using HELIN and Other Research Tools

HELIN is the Wallace Library's online catalog, shared with other members of the HELIN Consortium. Access HELIN, in basic or advanced search mode, from the Library home page. In addition to locating materials at Wheaton, you can use HELIN to locate and request, for one- to two-day delivery, materials at the consortium libraries. To find and request materials at Brown University, use the InRhode link in HELIN.

Use Journal Finder (also accessible from the Library home page) to locate the full-text of journals, newspapers, and magazines, whether print or electronic.

To find journal articles on a particular topic, search one of the library's Electronic Databases.

For more information, go to the Getting Started web page.

Placing Items on Reserve

Print, video, and DVD reserves are held behind the Circulation Desk. ERes, the Wallace Library electronic reserves system, allows students to access reserve readings in electronic format from any computer on campus. To place items on reserve please use the appropriate forms:

Print Reserves Form

Video/DVD Reserves Form

Electronic Reserves Form

Circulation staff can assist you with placing items on print or electronic reserve. Please cooperate by giving the Circulation staff as much lead-time as possible. While every effort will be made to accommodate late or urgent new requests, please keep eleventh-hour submissions to a minimum. It will be helpful if you indicate, at the time of your request, any documents that need to go on reserve immediately.

For questions regarding electronic reserves, please email reserves@wheatonma.edu.

Read more at Reserve Procedures and Policies.

Borrowing Library Materials

Faculty can borrow books and other media from the Wallace Library for a semester. Books borrowed from HELIN Libraries can be checked out for 28 days. Overdue fines will be assesed to the borrower and a replacement fee of $100 will be charged for lost books. Periodicals do not normally circulate. Borrowed items are subject to recall by request of interested patrons after 4 weeks into the loan period.

You can renew materials online, by phone (x3708), by email msavolai@wheatonma.edu), or in person at the Circulation Desk.

Borrowing Materials via Interlibrary Loan

Borrow books or order articles, not available at Wheaton or one of the HELIN libraries, through interlibrary loan.

Also, note that some of our databases, including WorldCat, CSA and Ovid databases, include direct Interlibrary Loan features that you are strongly encouraged to use. Ask any reference librarian for assistance (x3700).

Read more about ILL Procedures and Policies.

Digital Image Tools

There are two tools available for accessing digital images at Wheaton. Faculty may use either MDID or ARTstor, depending on the needs of a course, to create slide shows of images for students to study online. Any member of the Wheaton community may also use ARTstor to search, view, and use ARTstor's large collection of images in their academic work. Go to the Digital Image Access page to connect to either resource, or to Digital Tools for Faculty, MDID or ARTstor? to learn more about the two tools.

Liaison Support for Learning and Teaching

Librarian and academic technology liaisons, who are subject and/or academic software specialists, are responsible for the direct support of teaching, learning, and research, particularly as they are enhanced by the use of library and other information resources and through diverse applications of technology.

The liaisons support the research and curricular needs of academic departments in a variety of ways. Liaisons work with faculty, individually or in teams, to plan assignments and provide library research and technology skill instruction for classes both in the Library and in the classroom. For liaison specialties and contact information click here.

Please contact Margaret Gardner (x3705, mgardner@wheatonma.edu) or Scott Hamlin (x3767, shamlin@wheatonma.edu) with any questions about the liaison program.

First-Year Seminar Library Component

Library components of each First-Year Seminar section offer students an introduction to using the library for research. By teaching them basic skills for information access, strategies for effective research, and methods for critical evaluation of information, a foundation is established for the progressive development of research skills in the major. Librarian liaisons for each seminar are assigned in May.

Special Library Privileges for Research

HELIN Libraries

Faculty and students have year-round, on-site borrowing privileges and access to the print and electronic resources of HELIN academic member libraries simply by showing their Wheaton ID to the appropriate staff. Several health sciences libraries require appointments.

Exception: Brown University Libraries

Faculty on continuing appointment are allowed access to Brown University Libraries as part of our HELIN membership. Access includes: entry to buildings; use of collections, including online resources [at two guest computers with 30 minutes use limit]; borrowing, up to 75 items with unlimited renewals. In order to gain access, you must obtain a Brown library card as follows:

  • Ask for a Letter of Introduction at the Wallace Library Circulation Desk.
  • Present the letter at the Gateway Service Desk, Rockefeller Library.
  • Receive your library card, valid for one year.
  • Repeat the process annually.
Students must justify their need to use the Brown University library collections on-site and obtain a "Letter of Introduction" from their liaison librarian, just as they do for many other non-HELIN research libraries.

Accessing the Library's Online Resources from Off-Campus

Most Wallace Library subscription databases and electronic journals are accessible to Wheaton faculty, students, and staff from off-campus. Consult the Off-Campus Access Web Page for directions.

Reserving Technology-Equipped Library Spaces

The Library maintains two electronic classrooms, one on the main level, the other on the stack level, that are primarily used to support the Library's instruction program. They are also used as a student computer labs. Faculty may reserve these classrooms for one-time class sessions when hands-on computing or computer demonstrations are required. Schedule the classroom through your departmental liaison no more than 7 days in advance.

The library also maintains four technology-equipped collaboration rooms, three on the stacks level and one on the periodicals level of the Library. Please encourage your students to take advantage of them. Faculty may reserve these spaces on behalf of their students or students may reserve these spaces themselves by contacting the Circulation Desk by phone (x3708) or by email (msavolai@wheatonma.edu)

Bibliographic Management -- RefWorks and Zotero

RefWorks is a web-based service that helps you collect, manage, cite, and share your research resources. You can create your own database by manually entering references, by importing references directly from online database, or by transferring libraries from other systems like Endnote, then organize, share and format your references. To learn more, see Documenting Your Research -- RefWorks.

Zotero is a free Firefox browser extension that helps you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. While Zotero continues to evolve and improve, as of this writing, there are significant limitations to its functionality. To learn more, see Documenting Your Research -- Zotero.

To ask for more information about bibliographic management, contact your departmental liaison. To learn more about Refworks, visit Wheaton's Refworks Guide page to access FAQ's, guides, and additional contact information.

Understanding Copyright and Fair Use

Unsure whether it's legal to copy that article to hand out to students or to copy a video for class use? Refer to the brochure Know Your Copy Rights for an overview of what you can do. The Library has created an Understanding Copyright and Fair Use page to provide some answers to these and other difficult copyright questions. Contact Deryl Freeman, Catalog & Metadata Librarian, Wallace Library x3716 or dfreeman@wheatonma.edu if you have questions.

Blackboard: Wheaton's Course Management System

There are two central contacts for Blackboard support: Jeanne Farrell (jfarrell@wheatonma.edu or ext.3629) and Diane DeMelo (ddemelo@wheatonma.edu or ext.3924). Faculty with any questions about Blackboard should feel free to contact them. Faculty who want to learn Blackboard's basic or more advanced features (such as creating quizzes and tests, managing students grades, etc.) can arrange for training by contacting either Jeanne or Diane. Students should call ext.3900 with any questions.
