All electronic resources are available from any networked computer on campus. Off campus access is available to authorized Wheaton users.

Accessible Archives

A collection of primary source material from 18th and 19th century periodicals, Accessible Archives "databases contain the rich, comprehensive material found in leading historic periodicals and books. Eyewitness accounts of historical events, vivid descriptions of daily life, editorial observations, commerce as seen through advertisements and genealogical records are now available..."

Individual "databases" within the collection include:
The Liberator, 1831-1865, a weekly newspaper published in Boston by William Lloyd Garrison, "a journalistic crusader who advocated the immediate emancipation of all slaves and gained a national reputation for being one of the most radical of American abolitionists."
Godey's Lady's Book, 1830-1885, a "magazine ...intended to entertain, inform and educate the women of America."
The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1728-1800, "considered The New York Times of the 18th century."
The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective, 1860-1865, includes The New York Herald, The Charleston Mercury and the Richmond Enquirer.
African American Newspapers: The 19th Century includes: Freedom's Journal (New York) 1827-1829, The Colored American (Weekly Advocate) (New York) 1837-1841, The North Star (Rochester, NY) 1847-1851, The National Era (Washington, D.C.) 1847-1860, Provincial Freeman (Chatham, Canada West) 1854-1857, Frederick Douglass Paper (Rochester, NY) 1851-1859, and The Christian Recorder 1861-1902.
American County Histories to 1900: coverage includes the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4) and New York (Parts 1 and 2).

Aluka

Aluka is an international, collaborative initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa. "The Aluka website includes a wide variety of high-quality scholarly materials contributed by Aluka's partners, ranging from archival documents, periodicals, books, reports, manuscripts, and reference works, to three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories, plant specimens, photographs, and slides. By aggregating these materials online, the Aluka collections link materials that are widely dispersed and difficult to access, opening up new opportunities for research, teaching, and broader public discussion. One of Aluka's primary objectives is to provide African scholars and students with access to scholarly materials originally from Africa, but now out of their reach." Brill E-Journal Package

A collection of 150 scholarly journals published by Brill, and 2 of their imprints: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and VSP. Subjects areas include Asian studies, Near East and Islamic studies, classics, religion, medieval and early history, philosophy, international law and human rights, psychology, sociology, materials science, chemistry, physics and engineering, and zoology. JAMA

The library now has a site license to the online edition of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association. Previously, access only was available by using a login and password. This new license package replaces the library's print and microfiche subscriptions.

JAMA, published continuously since 1883, is an international peer reviewed general medical journal published 48 times per year and is "the most widely circulated medical journal in the world."

Nation, National Review, New Republic Online Archives

Available on the EBSCOhost platform, these 3 titles can be searched separately or together and PDF's include the original article text and graphics. The Nation is America's oldest weekly news magazine with a focus on politics, culture, books, and the arts. Coverage is 1865 to the present. The National Review, founded by William F. Buckley, Jr., includes articles from 1955 to the present on such topics as politics, economics, and social and cultural issues. The New Republic is a leading journal of opinion with topics such as American politics, foreign policy, current events, the arts and culture, with coverage from 1914 to the present. NEW! 6/08

Oxford Music Online

Times (London) Digital Archive 1785-1985

Available from Gale (Cengage Learning), "the Times Digital Archive is a full-image online archive of every page published by The Times (London) from 1785-1985. The text within the images is fully searchable at the article level. Users can easily search news articles, obituaries, advertising and classifieds - virtually everything that appeared in the newspaper. Results are displayed at the article level and users may view the article - or the full page upon which it appeared."

Also, available from Gale, in Academic OneFile on the InfoTrac platform, are searchable articles from The Times from 1985 to the present. The two Times files are currently not cross-searchable, but will be in the "near future."

This new database replaces the Library's subscriptions to the microfilm edition of the Times, the print edition of the daily newspaper and the print Times Index. NEW! 7/08

Treatise on Geochemistry

The electronic version of the 10 volume set published by Elsevier, the Treatise on Geochemistry is fully searchable and includes links to subscribed articles in ScienceDirect. Includes subjects such as: the atmosphere, oceans and marine geochemistry, meteorites, comets, and planets, surface and ground water, sediments, diagenesis, and sedimentary rocks, biogeochemistry, and environmental geochemistry.
