Information about Electronic Journals

The Wallace Library's collection of electronic journals and newspapers includes over 39,000 subscribed and/or freely available titles. The following list includes descriptions of ejournal collections, publisher sites that provide full text articles for subscribed titles, a selection of titles on subscription available only in digital format, and a selection of sites that provide free or open access full text articles.

Unless indicated by " " as freely available, access is restricted to the Wheaton network, or from off campus (authorized Wheaton users only).

Accessible Archives. A collection of primary source material from 18th and 19th century periodicals, including African American newspapers, Civil War era newspapers, and state histories up to 1900 for Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

AERA SIG Communication of Research. Over 160 open access scholarly, peer reviewed journals in education. Selected by the American Educational Research Association Special Interest Group.

AgEcon. A free, open access repository of full text scholarly literature in agricultural and applied economics, including: working papers, conference papers and articles from 35 journals. From the University of Minnesota.

American Chemical Society (ACS). The library's subscription to the ACS Legacy Archives offers a searchable full text database of all journals published by the ACS from 1879 to 1995. The web editions subscription package includes the full text of all ACS journals published from 1996 to the present. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

American Digital Archive of the Jewish Experience. ADAJE is an electronic repository of digitized American Jewish periodicals. The first content available is the Society's journal, American Jewish History, for the years 1893-1978, published under its previous titles: Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society (1893-1961) and American Jewish Historical Quarterly (1961-1978).

American Economic Association. Full text access to current content of all AEA publications. The earlier content for the American Economic Review, the Journal of Economic Literature, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives is available in JSTOR. NEW!! 11/09

American Geophysical Union (AGU). Access to table of contents for all publications and full text access to the library's subscriptions in electronic format. Full text coverage varies by title. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

American Mathematical Society (AMS). Access to the entire database is available free of charge to Wheaton users and full text access is limited to the titles that the library subscribes to in paper format, plus the free AMS ejournals. The full text of earlier volumes of the Proceedings and the Transactions is available in JSTOR. Full text coverage varies by title. Articles are available in PDF (Adobe Acrobat required) or PostScript (PostScript Viewer required).

American Museum of Natural History Research Library. Free access to the Museum's publications, beginning with the Annual Report of the American Museum of Natural History first published in 1870. "AMNH scientific publications disseminate the results of laboratory investigations and fieldwork conducted by museum scientists and their colleagues in the areas of zoological systematics, paleontology, geology, evolution, and anthropology."

American Periodicals Series Online (APS). A collection of over 1,500 digitized American periodicals published between 1740 and 1900. Includes special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, and children's and women's magazines. The APS collection can be searched separately, or combined with one or both of the titles in ProQuest's Historical Newspaper Collection: The New York Times and Washington Post.

Ammons Scientific Publications. Full text access to Perceptual and Motor Skills and Psychological Reports. Coverage is vol. 1 to the present.

Annual Reviews. Access to the entire database is available free of charge to Wheaton users and full text access is limited to the titles that the library subscribes to in electronic format. Full text coverage is 1996 or 1997 to the present. The full text of earlier volumes of the Annual Review of Anthropology, Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, and the Annual Review of Sociology is available in JSTOR. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

AnthroSource. Developed by the American Anthropological Association and now published by Wiley-Blackwell. Full text access is available for the AAA's journals, with direct linking to the back files of 8 titles available in JSTOR. Dates of coverage varies by title. Articles are available in PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

Archive of African Journals. The African e-Journals Project is produced by the Michigan State University African Studies Center, MSU Libraries, and Matrix: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Science Online. It is co-sponsored by the Association of African Universities and the African Studies Association in the U.S.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The library's subscription to the Digital Library, aka ACM Portal, contains the full text of all online publications, including journals, magazines, transactions, proceedings, newsletters, SIGs, and publications by affliated organizations. Full text coverage for most titles is vol. 1 to the present. Adobe Acrobat is required for downloading articles. Also included in our subscription is the Online Guide to Computing Literature, with over 750,000 bibliographic citations from over 3,000 publishers covering core works in computing, including journals, proceedings, books, technical reports, and dissertations. Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII). Free resource for Australian legal information. AustLII is a joint facility of the UTS and UNSW Faculties of Law. NEW!! 10/09

Australian Periodical Publications 1840-1845. Free access to 65 periodicals published from 1840-1845. Produced by the Australian Cooperative Digitisation Project. NEW!! 6/09

Austrian Newspapers Online. Free access to over 150 Austrian newspapers published from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Produced by the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.

Bentham Open Access. A collection of over 220 open access journals in science, technology, and medicine. Full text coverage begins in 2008. NEW TITLES!! 10/09

Bioline International. A fully open access provider of over 80 quality bioscience journals published in developing countries.

BioMed Central. Over 220 open access journals in the sciences. Dates of coverage varies. NEW TITLES!! 10/09

BioOne. A collaboration among scientific societies, libraries, academe, and the commercial sector, the library's subscription to BioOne and BioOne.2 provides a searchable database and full text access to 155 journals in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Full text coverage for most titles is 2000 to the present. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required). NEW TITLES!! 9/09

Blackwell Publishing. Full text access is available for almost all (currently over 980 titles) of the Blackwell journals formerly in the Synergy database. Dates of coverage varies by title. Brill E-Journals. A collection of over 160 scholarly journals published by Brill, and 2 of their imprints: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and VSP. Subjects areas include Asian studies, Near East and Islamic studies, classics, religion, medieval and early history, philosophy, international law and human rights, psychology, sociology, materials science, chemistry, physics and engineering, and zoology. British History Online. A digital library containing some of the core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles, such as the journals of the Houses of Parliament. Created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust.

Cambridge Journals Online. Access to the entire database is available free of charge to Wheaton users. Full text access is available for almost all (currently 257 titles) of the Cambridge University Press journals. Full text coverage for most titles is 1997 to the present. The full text of earlier volumes for 39 titles is available in JSTOR. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required). NEW TITLES!! 6/09

Chronicle of Higher Education. Unlimited access to all parts of the Chronicle's web site, which is updated daily, five times a week. The full text of the weekly newspaper is available every Monday. The searchable archive includes all issues from September 1989, and individual issues can be browsed beginning with January 1995. Also included in the database is the annual Chronicle Almanac, a compilation of college enrollment trends, demographics, faculty pay, tuition fees, and other statistics.

Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Search and view newspaper pages from 1880-1910 and find information about American newspapers published between 1690 to the present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

Compact Memory. The database contains actual reproductions of the most important research journals for German-Jewish history, covering the entire German-speaking world and published from the 19th century until the Nazi rise to power in 1933. Project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. NEW!! 5/09

Copernicus Publications. Over 35 open access scientific journals. NEW!! 10/09

Core Historical Literature of Agriculture (CHLA). From Cornell University, CHLA is an electronic collection of agricultural books and periodicals published between the early nineteenth century and the middle to late twentieth century in the fields of agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, animal science, crops and their protection, food science, forestry, human nutrition, rural sociology, and soil science.

Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). Headquartered in Dakar Senegal, CODESRIA was established in 1973 as an independent Pan-African research organisation with a primary focus on the social sciences, broadly defined. Free access to 9 journals.

CQ Press. Full text access to CQ Researcher, 1991 to the present and CQ Weekly, 1983 to the present.

Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press. Each week the CDPSP "presents a selection of Russian-language press materials, carefully translated into English. The translations are intended for use in teaching and research. They are therefore presented as documentary materials without elaboration or comment, and state the opinions and views of the original authors, not of the publisher of the journal." Full text access from 1949 to the present. Digitized by EastView Information Services.

Cyberliber: an Electronic Library for Mycology. "... a resource for mycologists and all others interested in the scientific study of fungi. Most of the information deals with bibliographic citations of publications relating to fungi." Includes the full text of 37 journals.

Digital Himalaya. Initially produced by the Department of Social Anthropology at Cambridge University with an objective to "preserve in a digital medium archival anthropological materials from the Himalayan region that are quickly degenerating in their current forms, including films in various formats, still photographs, sound recordings, field notes, maps and rare journals." Includes over 30 full text journals. In English, Sanskrit or French. NEW!! 6/09

Digital Innovation South Africa (DISA). "DISA is a freely accessible online scholarly resource focusing on the socio-political history of South Africa, particularly the struggle for freedom during the period from 1950 to the first democratic elections in 1994, providing a wealth of material on this fascinating period of the country's history." Includes over 40 full text journals. NEW!! 6/09

Digital Library of the Commons.. "The Digital Library of the Commons (DLC) provides free access to an archive of international literature on the commons, common-pool resources and common property. Features for authors and readers include advanced searching; browsing by region, sector, and author name; an author submission portal for uploading a variety of document formats; and a service that uses email to alert subscribers to new documents in their area of interest." Includes full text for over 80 journals.

Digital South Asia Library. Provides digital materials for reference and research on South Asia, including some periodicals and newspapers. This project builds upon a two-year pilot project funded by the Association of Research Libraries' Global Resources Program with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

DigiZeitschriften Open Access Journals. Over 70 full text journals in the field of economics. From the German National Library of Economics. In German.

Duke University Press Journals. Full text access to 37 Duke UP journals, made available by HighWire Press. Includes titles dropped from the Project Muse database for 2005+. Érudit Open Access. Produced by a multi-institutional publishing consortium comprising the Université de Montréal, the Université Laval and the Université du Québec à Montréal, Érudit includes 59 open access journals. In French. NEW TITLES!! 9/09

Ethnic NewsWatch. A collection of full text newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. Searchable in both English and Spanish, the library's subscription to the database includes articles from over 330 publications from the early 1990's to the present. The database may be searched separately or combined with either GenderWatch and/or the newspaper databases (see ProQuest Newspapers). NEW TITLES!! 5/09

EUFeeds. Maintained by the European Journalism Centre in the Netherlands, EUFeeds is a RSS aggregator for European newspapers that provides access to more than 400 papers from the European Union.

Exilpresse Digital. A collection of 30 German exile magazines and newspapers from 1933-1945 including some Jewish publications. Produced by the German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek) from collections in the German Library in Frankfurt am Main. Mostly in German, but some articles are in English and/or Spanish. Federal Reserve Banks. Free full text access is available for publications of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, plus from the other Federal Reserve banks. Adobe Acrobat is required for downloading articles.

FRASER is a "project by the Research Division of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis to expand on its mission to provide economic information and data to researchers interested in the U.S. economy." Historical Newspapers in Washington. A collection of newspapers published in the state of Washington from the 1850's to the 1890's. NEW!! 7/09

History Cooperative. A nonprofit humanities resource offering top-level online history scholarship, including the full text of 25 journals published by the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the University of Illinois Press, and the National Academy Press. Full text coverage for most titles begins in the late 1990's to the present. The full text of earlier volumes for 7 titles is available in JSTOR. Articles are available in HTML. Home Economics Archive (HEARTH). "HEARTH is a core electronic collection of books and journals in Home Economics and related disciplines. Titles published between 1850 and 1950 were selected and ranked by teams of scholars for their great historical importance." Includes Good Housekeeping 1885-1950 and Harper's Bazaar 1867-1900. Hong Kong Journals Online. Full text access to selected academic and professional journals published in Hong Kong. Titles included in this database cover a wide range of disciplines including law, medicine and education. In English and Chinese. NEW!! 10/09

InformaWorld. Access to the entire database is available free of charge to Wheaton users. Full text access is available for over 1,400 journals (indexes/abstracts are excluded) published by Informaworld, including their various imprints: Psychology Press, Routledge, Taylor & Francis, Lawrence Erlbaum, and new for 2009, Haworth Press. Ingenta/Ingenta Connect (formerly Catchword). An aggregator for British and U.S. publishers. Full text access is available for over 90 paper and/or electronic subscriptions to publications of the American Sociological Association, British Psychological Society, OECD economic surveys, and MLA. The entire database is searchable and articles for which we do not have a subscription are available for purchase. Dates of coverage vary by publisher. International Monetary Fund Periodicals. Full text access to 26 journals published by the IMF.

Internet Library of Early Journals. A collection of 18th and 19th century British journals, including the Annual Register. Digitized by the Universities of Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Oxford.

JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Published continuously since 1883, JAMA is an international peer reviewed, and the "most widely circulated," general medical journal in the world. Published 48 times per year. Fully searchable back to 1966, with full text articles available from 1998 to the present. NEW SITE LICENSE!! 1/09

J-STAGE (Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic). Includes the full text of over 400 journals, proceedings, and reports from Japanese scientific societies. Subjects include biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics, science, and zoology. In Japanese and English.

JSTOR. A searchable database containing the full text of over 900 core scholarly journals from various publishers and in multiple disciplines. Coverage for each title begins with volume 1 and up to 2 to 7 years from the current issue. The Library's subscription package includes: Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, Arts & Sciences III, Arts & Sciences IV, and Arts & Sciences VII collections. Full text articles replicate the original published format and may be converted to PDF format (Adobe Acrobat required). For the titles common to JSTOR and Project Muse, users are now able to search and browse the title, author, and abstract information for articles in the recent issues in addition to searching the full text for the past articles in JSTOR. LexisNexis Academic. Over 5,500 U.S. and foreign newspapers, periodicals and law reviews.

LION (Literature Online). A collection of searchable indexes, bibliographies, and full text literary and reference databases. Primary texts include English and American poetry, English fiction, and English and American drama, ranging from 600 to the early 20th century. LION also includes the full text of over 250 journals. Full text coverage for most titles begins in the mid 1990's to the present. The full text of earlier volumes for over 40 titles is available in JSTOR. NEW TITLES!! 9/09

Literary Reference Center. An EBSCO database. Full text literary information from books and monographs, major literary encyclopedias and reference works, and over 450 journals.

Literature Resource Center. Biographical information, overviews, full text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world. Includes the Gale series Contemporary Authors and the Dictionary of Literary Biography, plus over 380 literary journals. NEW TITLES!! 9/09

Making of America (MOA) from the Library of Congress, or Making of America (MOA) from University of Michigan. MOA is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. Made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the collection contains material from sites maintained by Cornell University, the University of Michigan, and the Library of Congress. Over 50,000 full text journal articles from the 19th century are available, from more than 50 publications such as: Atlantic Monthly, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Ladies' Repository, Scientific American, Scribner's, and Vanity Fair.

Milledgeville Historic Newspapers Archive. Produced by the Digital Library of Georgia at the University of Georgia Libraries, the archive contains newspapers published between 1808 to 1920 in Milledgeville, the state capital from 1803 to 1868. NEW!! 10/09

Missouri Botanical Garden Botanicus Collection. "Botanicus is a freely accessible portal to historic botanical literature from the Missouri Botanical Garden Library. Botanicus is made possible through support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, W.M. Keck Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation." Over 45 journals published from the early 1800's to the present. NEW!! 10/09

MIT Press Journals. Full text access to titles that the library subscribes to in paper and/or electronic format. These titles were previously available online in Ingenta. Coverage varies by title, plus the full text of earlier volumes for 4 titles is available in JSTOR. Adobe Acrobat is required for downloading articles.

Modernist Journals Project. "The MJP is a multi-faceted project that aims to be a major resource for the study of modernism and its rise in the English-speaking world, with periodical literature as its central concern." Dates of coverage: 1890 to 1922. Some titles include The New Age 1907-1922, Poetry 1912-1922, and Scribner's Magazine 1915-1916. Sponsored by the Brown University Library.

NASA Astrophysics Data System. A digital library portal for researchers in astronomy and physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant. The ADS maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 7.3 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and arXiv e-prints. Includes full text back files of 63 journals.

Nation, National Review and New Republic Archives. Titles can be searched separately or cross-searched. Full text coverage of the Nation is 1865 to the present, the National Review is 1955 to the present, and the New Republic is 1914 to the present.

National Academy of Sciences. Full text access to the Proceedings from vol. 1, 1915 to the present. Coverage in PNAS spans the biological, physical, and social sciences. PNAS is published weekly in print, and daily online in PNAS Early Edition. Articles are available in either HTML or PDF (Adobe Acrobat required).

National Library of Australia Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803-1954. Some of the available digitized newspapers include: the Argus (Melbourne), the Brisbane Courier, the Canberra Times, the Northern Territory Times, the Perth Gazette, and the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser.

Nature. Published weekly, Nature Online provides peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology on the basis of its "originality, importance, interdisciplinary interest, timeliness, accessibility, elegance and surprising conclusions." Full text access is available from 1997 to the present.

Nature Open Access. Free access to the backfiles (1 year to 5 years ago) of 34 journals from the Nature Publishing Group.

NCSE (Nineteenth-Century Serials Edition) Facsimiles. "NCSE is a free, online scholarly edition of six nineteenth-century periodicals and newspapers. It is a collaboration between Birkbeck, University of London, King's College London (Centre for Computing in the Humanities and the Department of English), the British Library, and Olive Software." Includes the English Woman's Journal 1858-1864.

New England Journal of Medicine. Published weekly, NEJM is the world's oldest continuously published medical journal. This peer-reviewed journal contains editorials, papers on original research, review articles, book reviews, correspondences, and case reports. Published by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Fully searchable back to 1975, with full text articles available from 1993 to the present.

NUMDAM. NUMérisation de Documents Anciens Mathématiques (NUMDAM) includes the full text of over 70 mathematics journals from vol. 1 (some from the 19th century) to the 2000's. In French and English. NEW TITLES!! 1/09

Oxford University Press (OUP). Full text access is available for almost all (currently 243 titles) of the Oxford University Press journals. The full text of earlier volumes for over 25 titles is available in JSTOR. Full text coverage varies from the late 1990's or 2000 to the present. Adobe Acrobat is required for downloading articles. Papers Past. A collection of 53 newspapers published in New Zealand from 1839 to 1932. NEW!! 7/09

Periodici Italiani Digitalizzati.
