HOW DO I FIND BOOKS ON MY TOPIC?

ELIZA, the library's online catalog, is the "key" to finding information in the Wallace Library. Books, periodical titles, audiovisual material (e.g., CDs, phonorecordings), special collections, and interactive multimedia are all catalogued in ELIZA. Search, using the web version, by 1) author; 2) title, if a particular work's title is known; 3) subject heading, if the Library of Congress Subject Heading is known; and 4) keyword, to combine words and to find LC Subject Headings in records.

Note the call# and location to find the item on the shelf.

WorldCat is another online catalog, but of information in 1000's of libraries around the world. Books, periodical titles, audiovisual material (e.g., cds, phonorecordings), special collections, web sites, and interactive multimedia are all catalogued in WorldCat. Search by author, title, keywords, or subject heading among other options. Always check the Wheaton Library's catalog (ELIZA) before you order an item via Interlibrary Loan. Available via the "quick link" under Online Research Databases from the Library Homepage "Electronic Resources" link.

HOW DO I ACTUALLY GET THE ARTICLES I KNOW I NEED?

After locating a bibliographic reference to a journal article using online indexes/abstracts(databases) or in books or other articles, search by title of periodical in ELIZA, the library's online catalog, to see if Wheaton has it in print or electronic format. (An automatic title search in ELIZA is initiated from each bibliographic record generated by a search in the Ovid, InfoTRAC, and WorldCat databases.) ELIZA leads you directly to many electronic journals for full-text articles when they are available in that format. A subject search in Expanded Academic Index, often yields full-text articles.

When an item is not available at Wheaton, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Use ILL-LINK from the Library Home Page's "Online Request Forms" or the direct order function within the Ovid or WorldCat databases. Allow up to 2 weeks.

WORLD WIDE WEB RESOURCES

EVALUATE WHAT YOU FIND ON THE WEB!

For some guidance, look at Evaluating Internet Information.
In addition to evaluating the appropriateness and reliability of the information you find, pay particular attention to its authority. Who is responsible for its content and for what purpose is it written?

Search Tools

WorldCat (see description above) by limiting a keyword search to Internet Resources, you can locate web sites catalogued (vetted) by libraries worldwide, usually, a good indication of quality and relevance.

Search Engines
Use your favorite one or two, e.g., Google , AllTheWeb.
